This is because the save games have micro transactions associated with them, so if something happens with the ability to authenticate, it no longer allows the save.
Basically once again, the experience is better when you acquire the game through other means.
I'm not using the steam cloud saves as it just chewed up the allocated space on that far too quickly. Had no issues with this until the patch yesterday. Happened when I got passed the explosion data retrieval mission.
Honestly with the amount of performance issues and bugs I've been dealing with this is a bit much now.
1. Close the game and exit steam completely
2. Go to Program Files (maybe x86)\Steam\userdata\some number\337000
3. Backup the whole 337000 folder (This is where your saves are, you don't want to lose them so back it up first. You will need your old remotecache.vdf file from this folder later on so BACK IT UP NOW!)
4. Delete all but your most recent saves from the remote folder (Did I mention you need to back them up? Don't forget!)
5. Delete the remotecache.vdf file in the 337000 folder.
6. Launch steam then launch Deus Ex again, The game should show NO saved games, since you deleted the remotecache.vdf it created a new, mostly blank one (this is what we want for now)
7. Close the game and exit Steam completely
8. Delete the new remotecache.vdf file in the 337000 folder and replace it with your original one from your backup.
9. Launch steam and then launch Deus Ex again.
10. You should now be able to save games normally again (until it stops working again)
I've explicitly disabled steam cloud in all my games. Why it should be enabled against my will?
I appreaciate your workaround, but having issues even with saving/loading at this point of AAA games history BECAUSE OF THE CLOUD... what a professionals quality test team. +1 for you.
- could not save any longer at around 100 saves
- resolved by moving most of my saves to a backup folder
- problem came back as I was not able to save
- tried a bunch of stuff but I had to backup saves again and delete the old saves from in game
Someone suggested launching the game with steam in offline mode then manually disabling your internet, going to try this later.
I really doubt the devs wanted the MTs, ♥♥♥♥♥ save system, and what not. Squeenix is big on executive meddling afaik.
After booting steam again (and computer at this instance) Steam finds the actual saves from somewhere and stuffs them right back into Steam Cloud. The new saves stayed in their place but can't be loaded. Actually none of the saves can't be loaded anymore.
So, THIS DOESN'T WORK AFTERALL.
Failed futile attempt at a workaround
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's my workaround which seems to work after quick five minute testing:
1. BACKUP ALL YOUR SAVES in the [steaminstallfolder]/userdata/[longnumber]/337000/remote folder. Actually just backup the whole 337000 folder.
2. Leave Steam Cloud sync on and close Steam
3. Create a set of empty files with names corresponding to your save files.
So basically you have save files "DXNGsavegame0000.dat", "DXNGsavegame0001.dat" etc. up to whatever number you got before it stopped saving. Mine stopped saving after save "DXNGsavegame0119.dat", but the saves went up to "DXNGsavegame0122.dat". So make empty files somewhere else with exact same names as all your save files.
I did mine this way: Create new folder on Desktop -> Create empty text file in it. -> changed text files name and filetype to "DXNGsavegame0000.dat" (ignore windows' complain about changing filetype) -> spam Copy & paste to get lost of these. -> Bulk changed filenames to match Actual Save file names with Bulk Rename Utility I got from this article: http://www.howtogeek.com/111859/how-to-batch-rename-files-in-windows-4-ways-to-rename-multiple-files/
There's probably a better way to create that large batch of empty file names but this is how I did it.
4. Replace all the save files in [steaminstallfolder]/userdata/[longnumber]/337000/remote with these empty fake save files. REMEMBER TO BACKUP BEFORE THIS.
5. Launch Steam. Check DXMD's Properties to make sure that it has synced the empty files into cloud. Cloud should now show only few kb used.
6. Close steam again completely.
7. Take few of your last real saves, the ones you want to use, from your backup and copy them into [steaminstallfolder]/userdata/[longnumber]/337000/remote replacing the empty files.
8. Launch Steam again, Check DXMD properties and cloud sync should now show at least few mb used.
9. Launch DXMD and you should now have only those actual saves you put back in the save menu. It shouldn't show the fake saves at all. You should also be able to save, but it starts saving again from Save01. So just be aware of that if have some specific saves you want to keep.
Note: I threw in the last 5 saves, which contained two actual saves (Save0118 and Save0119) and three saves which the game hadn't actually created (Save0120 - Save0122). But when I looked into the save menu in-game, it showed saves Save0115 - Save0119. I don't know if the 115-117 work, because I was pretty much only interested in the last save, Save119.
Hope this helps at least some of you. I don't know if this keeps saving working for long or if it breaks down the next time I launch it. Let's hope for the best.
