Just picked this game up and quickly came to the conclusion it's one of the worst optimized games I've ever seen.
The suggestion to turn options down or off is frequently posted everywhere people complain about FPS in this game. Note that when someone says they're getting low FPS with the graphics preset "Low", everything is turned completely down or off, including MSAA.

I've seen lots of posts citing 50+ FPS in Medium and High with equivalent or slower CPU/GPU than I have. What secret I'm missing? I believe the Steam install includes all the patches. I'm running the latest NVIDIA driver and my OS is a fresh install and fully patched.
I have long since ceased giving actual tech support for this game, because the average poster is a barbarian who has no idea how computers work, and in all my years, I've not once received a 'thank you,' or any kind of credit for the amount of hours I put in. Peruse my literal years of tech support in my posting history if you have questions. Or don't.
You're not getting anything from me bar the absolute minimum, which is to turn off MSAA and stop pretending you can play one of the most demanding games on 2k or 4k resolution, with everything set max, 'because this other game lets me!'
So maybe my last post was received poorly? First, I appreciate all well intended help. Since I haven't been able to figure this out on my own, I'm at the mercy of strangers, like yourself, for help.
I don't believe I'm the average poster. I'm a credentialed network engineer (CCNP, CISSP, CASP, CEH, ITIL, RHCSA) with over 20+ years of experience building and supporting DoD SATCOM and HPC environments. Performing system test and evaluation is a core function of every engineering deliverable.
This game manages consumer expectations via the minimum and recommended hardware profiles. Step #1, requirements drill; make sure I have appropriate hardware to run the game (check). Second, the game provides a baseline capability via the preset graphics options and built-in benchmarking tool. Once optimal performance is found using the presets, a person can modify each setting and run further benchmark runs to assess quality and performance impacts. Again, the low preset has all the settings turned down or off entirely.
My hardware exceeds the game's recommended hardware profile and I'm running the game with the absolute lowest performance settings and still only getting 23FPS (you mentioned 2k and 4k in your post; per my original post, I'm running in HD).
This game was released in August of 2016, almost 4 years ago. While I appreciate that the consensus is that game requires a "beefy" system, a beefy system four years ago isn't as good as a beefy system today. The developer wouldn't be foolish enough to create games that couldn't be played until 5 years in the future.
I've seen posts and watched YouTube videos of people playing this game at very reasonable frame rates. So, I know it's possible to have a great gaming experience I just haven't yet. So, my only conclusion is that I'm missing some setting/s or patch/s.
You said you were done providing any other ideas. Would you reconsider?
Thanks in advance!
No, wait, actually, you can pay me to tech support for you. It's 73 dollars an hour, standard wage in my line of work, and I want an upfront cash advance of 500 dollars as compensation for having to deal with people who throw around their 20 years of network mega expertise as if it's relevant.
tl;dr no.
Turns out, you were right in your original response. So, a mighty thank you for your help. Sorry you haven't been treated well by the other people you've helped. I appreciate your taking the time to respond to my question.
I do want to clarify the MSAA setting for everyone else who might come across my post. If you're reading this now, chances are you've seen the suggestion to turn off the Multisample Anti-Aliasing (MSAA) setting. The Deus Ex game provides two presentation menus, both before and within the game. One is titled "Display Options" or "Display" and the other is titled "Graphics Options" or "Graphics" respectively. The MSAA setting is under the "Display" menus.
I, and likely many others, mistook the "Textured Filtering" anisotropic setting within the Graphics menu as being the anti-aliasing setting everyone is talking about. I believe this is a simple case of typoglycemia (there are plenty of examples online where the letters and/or words are messed up but the person can still read the sentence or phrase). Moreover, I think people expect to see resolution and refresh rate information in a "Display" menu and graphic processing options/features in a "Graphics" menu. Here are some helpful links for anyone else who might need more clarification:
Pre-game "Display Options"

After checking "Exclusive fullscreen", setting "MSAA" to "Off", and "Refresh Rate" to "144 Hz" in the "Display" menu, I had the following benchmark results (in HD):
Low
Average: 110.9
Minimum: 86.5
Maximum: 144.3
Medium
Average: 88.2
Minimum: 69.3
Maximum: 115.4
High
Average: 74.4
Minimum: 59.1
Maximum: 96.2
Very High
Average: 64.0
Minimum: 50.9
Maximum: 84.6
Ultra
Average: 53.6
Minimum: 41.7
Maximum: 69.7
