Will I Understand The Story?
I haven't played any of the previous Deus Ex games and I have no intention of doubling back to play them, but the live action trailer for Mankind Divided Piqued my interest with the story about the people with enhanced limbs being hacked and getting segrigated as a result. Can I understand whats going on without having played the other games?

You can simply read the summary of Human Revolution on wikipedia

Deus ex 1 best game ever made.
Deus ex HR really good game.
Deus ex MD we still don't know.
Well, I'm sure you can play it (a triple A sequel will always try to tell a new story, maybe you will not understand all of it, but I'm sure you will understand most of it).
But I'm also sure that there is no reason to avoid the really good Deus ex 1 and HR.
Sure Deus ex 1 is old, it is not a cinematic game, but it is still the best. I'm sure most new "players" cannot understand it (new "players" don't like to play, just watch "movies").
Deus ex HR on the other hand is short and easy and also cinematic, and it is also a prequel of deus ex 1... so I think most new "players" can still play it too.

If you have no intention of learning the story/plot of the previous games in reference to the story/plot of Mankind Divided, then of course you will be confused when references to things from previous games pop up, as they likely do in most series. Whether or not you understand them is on you completely.

There is NO reason to not play Human Revolution, it's an absolutely stellar game. It's on sale a lot of times, you'll appreciate Mankind Divided a lot more if you finish Human Revolution.
Deus ex: human revolution was an ok game with a mediocre story composed of tired sci-fi cliches. I guess it's a bit too early to pass a final judgement on the new game but I think it's pretty unlikely that there will be anything so complex in it's story that will require a complete understanding of a previous game's plot. At any rate, I wouldn't recommend HR for it's story to anybody.
They are probably going to make the game very easy to pick up and understand and will refer to the events of the previous game a lot, so like other people said you really should pick up the first game on sale or something it's a masterpiece in my opinon, really made me want to (and I did) go back and play the first 2 Deus Ex games. Otherwise I think it won't matter to much.
Oh no! Don't just ignore the original because you think it won't be worth your time!

It will most certainly be worth your time. People will exaggerate when they say it's "the best game ever" (no such thing) but it is certainly one of the best.

It can be something to do while you wait for DXMD, after all. Only 30 hours at most, It's only $10 on GOG and Steam.

Please play the original Deus Ex. You probably won't regret it.

...

But if you simply MUST ignore one of the most fantastic things ever... then yes, you can probably play DXMD without having played the other games. It's a prequel to the original anyway.

It is a sequel to Human Revolution . To understand the stroy you need to play only Human revolution. Human reveolution takes place before the previous deus ex games and Mankind divided takes place after Revolution.

I still need to play Planescape Torment and Baldur's Gate so I can be wrong... but for now I really think deus ex 1 is the best game ever... Certainly it has many flaws, it is not perfect in any ways but it is so good that I just don't care. Still I think no game is really perfect, there are just some games that are so good that you don't care about flaws (and when I think about it I usually like games with more flaws because usually they try more new and original things).

PS. I got it on gog

You should play Human Revolution. I expect everything will be explained fine in MD, but I think you should play HR anyway, its a great game (as is the original) and will introduce you properly to some of the events that MD is talking about.

Not to derail the topic too much, but I just think there is no "best game ever" because people have different tastes.

Ocarina of Time is widely considered to be one of the best games ever.... yet I could never get into it.

Half-Life 2 is universally lauded. But I've met tons of people who claim they find it utterly boring (I dunno why!)

I also tried Planescape. Call me an unenlighted neanderthal COD scrub all you want I don't care... but I did not find it entertaining enough to continue far.

I love Deus Ex. I know you do. If Deus Ex is the best game in your world, thats great. But people have different gaming experiences and preferances.

PS: GOG is great! If I did not already have it on steam, I would have gotton Deus Ex on GOG by now.

Maybe for my next playthrough.... whenever that is.

That makes no sense. In that way is Human Revolution outdated and better looking version of what? Your post makes no sense.
