Multi-tool gadget: how to use?

It's supposed to be able to hack anything but it will not hack laptops in the game. What is it supposed to help with and how do you use it? Many thanks.

Just point that multitool on the object your trying to hack then hold it.

It can crack security panels on doors/safes/etc. It cannot, to my knowledge, be used on laptops. To use it, place it on your hotbar and equip it. You'll see yourself holding it in your hand just like you would a gun. Point it at the object you want to hack and hold down left mouse button until the indicator gets to 100. At 100, the panel will unlock and grant you access to the door/safe/etc.

it can be used on laptops just used a multi tool on a rank 5 security computer to shut down the cameras

Assign it to an inventory slot, equip it, hold E while looking at something you can hack.

I stand corrected. Thanks Rogue. I'm far enough in the game where i'm getting lazy about hacking, but have crafting mats coming out of my ears. Cracking laptops with multitools will save some time.

Yes, they can indeed be used on laptops. Just point it to them (aim for the keyboard) and hold down LMB until 100.

It's just like the good old multi-tools from the first Deus Ex. Glad they made a return.

The good thing about multi tool is that people don't mind you using them. So you can use it to unlock doors or laptops that would normally get you caught while hacking. It's fun using them next to police or other guards and unlock certain doors.

Often they also help you quickly unlock you something that you otherwise would have no issue unlocking, but a camera would spot you in the time it would take to hack said device).

My main complaint is that, like most other resources in this game, there are way too many of them. They should be a little more valuable. In the first version of Prague you can find way more than 40 or so and that's not including all the multitools you can buy from shops.
