Combat Rifle > All
Sooo, I'm on my 9th or so run through the game, still searching for that elusive Foxiest of the Hounds trophy.

I have to say that I've used and fully upgraded every single weapon over and again, including the pre-order Elite weapons. After careful observation and evaualution of the performance of each weapon in action, the very best weapon in this game for medium to long range engagement is the commonly available combat rifle.

Even for discreet sniping, there is no beating the combat rifle with a silencer on full auto. The Lancer with a silencer is horrible in comparison because it doesn't always down the target in one shot, and if it doesn't, then the target can recover and run to an alarm, faster than Jensen can fire a follow-up shot. The combat rifle, on the other hand, sort of 'stun locks an enemy' with round after round until he's dead. It usually doesn't take more than 3 or 4 rounds. I recommend keeping it on full auto.

The best weapon for close range is the sub-machine gun, for the same reason as above-- stun lock on full auto. Do not use the burst fire mode on the sub, because you'll regret it. Burst fire does not 'stun lock' the enemy, and if the target lives through the burst, he'll run to an alarm faster than Jensen can reaquire him.

Speaking of burst fire, that's exactly why the elite weapons are inferior- they don't have a full auto mode. None of the Elite weapons will down an enemy in one burst, and there isn't generally time to burst a second time before Jensen is aquired and soon dead. The idea is to down the target without them alerting their squad. Burst weapons do not cut it in this game for that purpose.

If anyone is playing through this game for the first time or two and wondering which weapons to keep or discard, keep the basic pistol, full auto, sub-machine gun, full auto and the combat rifle, full auto. All the rest are gimmicks, especially the stun gun and tranq rifle. Jensen's fists and Tesla Augment are better, respectively.

My 2 cents.

Not true, play the NG+ side of the game and let your Aug's. do the work. Be it such, only a few weapons are suited for game play here. The Tesla aug does a far better job then the Stun gun does on any given sunday and can take out up to 4 at once. The Lancer with it's slow reload time is not one of those main-stay weapons, so it's use has it's limits. The Nanoblade Aug. replaced the Crossbow in HR. Those 2 aug's with the multi-takedown, a Revolver should be more then 1 may need.

Weapons with burst modes can be tapped repeatedly for incredibly high rates of fire. The elite combat rifle and pistol also have way higher damage per bullet.

Tapping burst repeadetly on a target wastes ammo though and leads to more frequent reloading, often at inopportune moments, as in "I need only one more burst to down that target before he hits the alarm, but oh noes, I have to reload!"

During my playthroughs I found that automatic weapons did not waste as much ammo as the burst fire, and due to their higher ammo capacities, I rarely ecountered a situation where I ran out of of ammo just before some enemy hit the alarm.

To your second point, the elite combat rifle and pistol actually do not have higher damage per bullet numbers than the regular ones. I've fully upgraded all of them and the primary difference between them is the alternative fire mode are burst for the elite weapons instead of full auto for the standard weapons.

They do have higher damage. The stats screen in game is little more than a list of lies. Check the wiki for the actual stats and how the guns work.

The elite pistol is notable for destroying cameras with a single bullet, even with a silencer on.

Okay. I read the wiki. I also played through several games with these Elite version weapons. My experience with them is that the full auto version are superior for reasons I've stated in post #1 above.

1. Full Auto stun locks enemies and prevents them from escaping with things like Titan shields. Burst weapons do not.

2. The full auto weapons have higher capacity magazines, which means less reloading during room clearing.

For me, the standard Combat Rifle in full auto fire mode is the superior weapon for nearly any circumstance where a firearm is the preferred tool to utilize.

Your mileage may vary.
