Stuck around 30 fps?
I didn't actually get this on Steam, I got the GOG version, but their forums are dead so I'm asking here.

I have a gaming laptop with a GTX 1060 a 3240x2160 screen. I started the first mission, and was getting 30 fps (according to the GOG Galaxy overlay counter), so I lowered the in-game resolution from 3240x2160 gradually down, wasn't getting any improvement in fps. I went all the way down to 1366x768 graphics. I don't understand why. Usually lowering the resolution brings the biggest performance improvement.

Then I changed the in-game graphics preset from High to Low, and it brought me up from 30 to 40 fps. But at this point it looks like absolute trash.

This is a game from 2016. Is it the most poorly optimized PC game of all time or am I missing something?

So i can't promise it will work as well as you expect since i have still drops in Prague that i'm trying to work around ... i'll get the GOG version to test today

But since you didn't mention, i bet you have like MSAA x8 in Display options

It ruins the performance like crazy, start here and let me know :)

MSAA needs to be turned off mate. Even on the 30 series of rtx cards

MSAA is off, it's the 2nd thing I tried :)

Hope you got this sorted. Just for reference I run the game without MSAA @ 1920 x 1080 on high settings with v sync. It runs OK with a 2070s, but with my old rig with a 1050ti I was lucky to get 40 fps. With your 1060 I would expect a playable game even if it doesn't hit the framerate heights of 100+.

It is unfortunately just one of those games...

wow may i ask what is the brand and model of your laptop? just got curious bc of your screen seems to be pretty decent, few laptops have that screen

Surface Book 2 (2017) with GTX 1060. They released a 3 in 2020, and there's a 4 coming out this year I think.

In theory, and when it works fine, it's wonderful. Great screen as you see. It's very thin and lightweight, so ideal to travel, and is great for work. You can detach the screen and you get a high-quality tablet to watch movies in bed.

In practice there's some issues. Often when I detach the screen, and later plug it back in the laptop base, the Nvidia GPU (which is located in the laptop base) is not detected. So I gotta keep removing/reinserting until it's magically detected.

Also due to not having a fan, it heats up faster than gaming laptops, so it will underclock itself if the game is drawing maxing out the GPU for a sustained period, which will drop your framerate. If you live in a hot country and have no AC, you WILL feel the effect on framerate.

Then there's the ridiculous price tag, since it's more for professionals rather than gamers.

A 1060 isn't exactly beast, you're trying to play on max settings with a really huge resolution, and on an ultra-thin laptop that you admit has cooling problems, and likely defaults to the integrated.

it has a pretty solid screen

This game must be the worst optimised game I've ever played. My situation is hilarious. I just recently upgraded my gpu to RTX 3080, the rest of my specs:
CPU - Ryzen 3600
32 GB RAM DDR4
Drive - Samsung 970Evo plus
Monitor QHD ultrawide 34"
I started with highest settings @ 1440p (21:9) on DX12 with Exclusive Fullscreen and guess what? My framerate is not only poor (mainly running at 27fps) but also unstable when I changed resolution to FullHD on ultrawide it went over 30 but still very unstable jumping like crazy. If I'm able to run Cyberpunk 2077 on highest settings @ 3440x1440 with full Ray Tracing on using DLSS on balanced mode and getting between 55-60 fps there's really no excuse for DX: Mankind Devided to run this bad on my PC. Is it the bad implementation of DX12 maybe or poor optimization in general? Funny enough my friend has the same specs except for GPU - he's got 1080ti and gets a way better performance somewhere around 50fps but I wouldn't say the framerate is largely stable but still. Is it because the game has been totally abandoned by the devs? I may add I haven't checked running it on DX11 (some say it helps) or turning MSSA off but will try that tomorrow if this is the only known solution.

look i'm sorry you had a bad experience, but there are things that if you do them it can really help a lot as it did for me, first of all, lower your res to 1920x1080 or similar, fully disable anti aliasing which can fix the whole fps issue in this game, make sure to turn on the V-sync and try to play it on DX11, ik you probably want to play this game at the best possible graphics but unfortunately newer hardware might not be all compatible with this game and cause it to crash or freeze, please also check if your cpu drivers might have caused the problems, if none of these helped fix the issue for you take a look at the guides section i'm sure you will find the best possible fix, keep me in touch

Turn off MSAA and stop using presets.

a 1060gtx particularly the mobile version will not play this well above 1080p. I had a desktop gtx970 which is faster than a 1060mobile and it could only handle 60 at 1080p with shadows turned down a little, no msaa.

Your expectations are too high for your computer specs.

Here is a 6gb desktop gtx1060 which is faster than yours on max detail, with no msaa, @1080p getting between 50-90 depending on what is going on in the game.
When they change to 1440p it drops to around 45-50.

So your performance seems about right. (ie 45 fps -22% is around 35fps, not accounting for throttling for heat etc)

Just so you can see a desktop 1060 is about 22% faster.
