"I never asked for this" difficulty
OMG.

Has anyone actually completed this achievement legitimately? Like, without cheesing save game backups and downgrading versions and the like?

I've tried to do this many times now, and am on the verge of giving up on this rare achievement...

I've watched a few alleged videos of it, but they appear to be edited, and I'm unconvienced they're authentic.

/sigh

yeah, that's what I'm afraid of... What I was asking is that if this achievement is actually achieveable without cheating. It seems like a false flag, red herring, what have you.... a carrot on a stick in front of a donkey which can't actually reach it.

I accomplished it fairly easily, though I did so by skipping everything that wasn't necessary and using the Tactical Pack's augmentation (reduce crafting costs and allow dismantling items for parts) to make my own biocells/multitools from dropped weapons. Using stealth and a stun gun, reloading whenever I got spotted, I was able to also get "Foxiest of the Hounds" at the same time. The main trick is to avoid all conflict unless that is impossible, and to use the stun gun/EMP + takedown method to quickly finish off the final boss.

Edit: Also, as a PC user, you have access to the save file cheat of making a backup of the save game. I never needed to use my backup, but I'm told dropping the backup back in the main save folder will let you get around the save deletion.

Any idea where the save file is located?

DXMD saves files in your Steam userdata folder. That will be in the Steam install path (example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\337000\remote). Might be best to back up all your saves (or the most recently edited ones) since their numbers don't quite match the numbers in-game, but the main game's saves will be prefixed with "DXNGsavegame".

Thanks,

I can't believe the Deus Ex designers would actually put something like this into the game. Secondly, I'm ashamed that I'm actually contemplating trying to circumvent their idiotic mechanic in order to 'earn' this achievement.

It makes me feel dirty even thinking about it and well... I think I'm done with this game.

I love the Deus Ex universe, but this achievement is a fools errand.

I'm not amused, Eidos.

I'm also not pleased with "Ironman" style achievements, or even modes. I'm fine with people doing that as a personal challenge, but as a completionist I despise being required to do it myself (which is getting more common these days). Which is why I backed up my saves: I don't have any qualms subverting an absurd achievement like this one. I just got lucky that I was able to earn it "properly".

Hopefully future DX games lose the achievement, even if the mode is here to stay. Because otherwise that's going to hang over me like a cloud as I play the game, reminding me that my completionist obsession will make me dislike the game as I try to "finish" it. Replays should be for fun, not to complete a massive challenge that most wouldn't even attempt.

It's easy actually. I dont know why people think it is difficult. Just do the side quests that dont require shootings and you're loaded with Augs. Remote Hacking + Biocell charge full + Cloak and you basically cannot be stopped. Do "The Heist" for max loot instead of Allison's rescue mission, and steal from the apartments near Jensen's' including the weapon vendor (save him for last). The Takedown button is the win button in every situation, you dont need anything else. Crouching automatically nullifies the need for the Stealth upgrade to your legs, and in the main game there are no heat detection sensors like in System Rift. Plus, you get a conveniently placed vent with an open shaft in the Apex Center where you can safely shoot the guy next to Marchenko's killswitch so.... yeah. Avoid falling for stupid reasons and dont rush, and you are absolutely guaranteed to succeed.

Second try - the only place I actually needed to use the consummables.

I think this achievement is quite easy if you play stealth. As said, with the cloak, you won't ever be seen. Therefore, just cloak through the whole level. For this, it's preferable to get as many biocells as you can, and upgrade your cloak to drain less energy.

The premise is that every level can be completed stealthily without getting spotted. So just stay stealthy, and if you ever get spotted, reload the game (legitimately).

If you know the stealth routes, many of the levels are laughably easy. For example, GARM can be finished in about 5 minutes without any confrontation.

On the other hand, if you insist on shooting your way through every level, this achievement can be hard, I'd imagine.

During my "I never asked for this" game, I did only the minimum necessary to progress. It was working fine until my game froze during the first mission after the train station bombing and, after restarting, I lost the achievement. On my second attempt, the game froze just before leaving for Golem City. Again, I lost the achievement. My third try ended with yet another freeze just before the end of the GARM mission.

I may give it one more go but this time I'll make manual backups of the saved game, as Jackkel Dragon suggests.

Dude...You can manually save the game in this difficulty an unlimited ammount of times. If the game freezes just reload the save next time you run the game. The freeze will not lock your save file. What will lock your save file is death. That's the only rule.

It's not that the achievement needs skill. It's just that it needs an extreme ammount of caution state, trial and error. That's why only 0,6% of players have it (myself included)

Prepare to reload your save at the slight alert sound you hear from any guard. Icarus landing, Full Cloak/Battery and Full Dermal Armor are a must to avoid any stupid accident.

There were some discussion on the forum with tips already on the topic. I did I never asked for this, and it is actually easier than "Factory Zero" was in Missing Link. That said, it is still difficult.

Skip Cult of Personality (too many turrets), skip the third part of the golden ticket (it is easy to get caught in the migration office and the cops with machine guns will instakill you), and I think the bank heist is more safe than the machinegod. Be very careful in the first part of Prague, as there you can die easily. Later, you will have enough points to not die in dumb accidents.

Otherwise, it is Foxiest of the Hounds / Ghost on all levels, because you don't want to get caugt. If someone is alarmed, you need to reload. Oh and you want to use the killswitch on the boss.

Just use stealth.

I'll do it soon.

That's some pretty good advice. I'd skip those sidequests, as well as K is for Kazdy, Neon Lights. The others pose minimal risk. I'd definintely do the Otar sidequests so that the theatre is not hostile. I'd also do the Eliza sidequest because she clears out a bunch of cops at the red light district, and that helps.

For Augs, I'd definitely take Icarus landing at the Koller reset.

And lastly, patience is important, especially if you've already completed your Foxiest/Pacifist run. I got bored with stealth, and started shooting, and almost died in my run because of that.
