The Illuminati

Actually, the triangles are a carry over from the PC version of HR, which was heavy on triangles and angles in general, because Nixxes made very heavy use of tesselation.

It made the game look quite stricking, so of course the next game, and every other deus ex game ever, will feature triangles.

In lore, the illuminati strive to become the supreme enlightened one through discipline and self-improvement above and beyond what a buddhist monk does, which means they must metaphorically sieze the eye at the top of the pyramid - or triangle, if you will - (their symbol), thus guaranteeing that this one person is now all-seeing, all-knowing, and all-powerful. In the first DX, Bob Page wasn't quite all that happy with how metaphorical and difficult this is, and since he doesn't like doing any kind of training to self-improve, he fashioned technology and machines for himself to literally become the enlightened one - something that JC comments on when you get to Page's chamber. If you keep clicking on Everret and Dowd, they'll tell you a bunch of ways in which Page deviated from the illuminati traditions, and why he was eventually deemed unfit - despite the fact that he was originally handpicked by Everett.

The triangle itself is also one of the most ancient and basic of symbols in human culture, and is universal. It simultaneously symbolizes a trinity (in this case, technology, mankind, and control, with control at the top and the others at the sides), as well as marks that there's a higher path above this trinity, a way to simply exist on a plane disconnected from them, the rules they impose, and even the influence they have on you (the truth). Thematically, by MD, Adam is doing the same sorts of things that the 'men in shadows' were doing to him in HR, and when you complete the game, you also complete the transformation. Adam is very much not part of the trinity. He's so far above it, he declares that if Janus doesn't agree to a face to face meeting, then he'll simply drag him out of his hiding place. By DX illuminati standards, Adam has all the qualities needed to be prima Illuminatus, but the fact that he disregards the trinity instantly makes him both an incredibly feared enemy, as well as an incredibly risky and powerful wild card that the split council of five keeps playing on each other. He also has legit claim to being what the illuminati calls 'the one,' as he's quite literally reached the peak of self-improvement, to the point where the more the world deteriorates around him, the more he stands out, and he's successfully detached himself from the triangle to the point where he makes his own rules.

His genes are also the foundation for nanotechnology. People like JC, Paul, Bob Page, and Walton Simons aren't actually immune to the grey death - rather, they always have it. It's dormant, and develops in synch with their bodies because Page spent decades of time, and trillions of money, integrating Adam's genetic structure into himself and Simons, but the process was later streamlined ever so slightly, so a vatborn baby with the desired makeup could then be cloned, and that's when DX OG starts, and you're talking to your 'brother' Paul, who has an uncanny resemblance to Adam Jensen. By invisible war, most of the people in the world are compatible with nanotechnology, and the main character Alex is a clone of already cloned people - who are all carrying Adam's genetic legacy. If you do what JC says, IW ends with the whole world being linked as one, and gaining perfect synchronization with nanites, which means that Adam's name is most fitting as he becomes the father of all mankind.

Thats great how you connected the DX story, makes it alittle more interesting to play now huh? I never could play IW (something about the way it looked) and quit with afew hours play time. HR n MD had me hooked from the start. I had forgotten all those cut scene's from the 1st DX, and found your comment refreshing. :jcdenton:

IW gets some stuff right, but a lot of it's awful. There is actually a fan patch for it now that makes it more stable and a better experience in general.

What I meant about how it looked, "candy coated" is more like it. Scaled down for younger people. I think i tried at 2 different times to install and play, but lost interest quickly. After reading what you said about it's story line, I would not have enjoyed playing it.

Besides DX/MD has my full attention at this point, and find it great fun after not playing HR in 3 years. :jensen:

Thanks for the long post.

I understand that the triangle with the eye is the typical imagery for the organisation, but I was just wondering specifically about the Deus Ex logo, with the gold, grey and black large triangle with 15 triangles inside, and whether it stood for anything.

It's obvious reference and rip off of Triforce from Zelda.
jk for those not bright enough that are ready to write whole book about how it is just coincidence or whatever
