puzzle with the blackboard and the pegs

so can anyone help me with this one? i cant make anything of this puzzle, cant move the pegs, cant use anything i have on any of them... im completely at loss here. i get that you should use the note with the board somehow but anything doesnt seem to make any sense.

You need more stuff. Try "bartering" with Denby.

Look at the note with the redacted text and notice that there are pairs of letters left visible. Use the strings to connect the pegs accordingly.

Nah, it has nothing to do with chalk. Perhapas "bartering" is the wrong word. Just give him something from your inventory, he'll give you something in return.
