Are you on Win10 Creators Update and latest NVIDIA drivers? Happens to me too. No solution found yet so stick with DD5 or 378.92 drivers.

Exactly (381.89 nvidia drivers)

As far as I know, DirectDraw gives no disadvantages. I ship it in Direct3D by default because that's what a number of computers are able to use, but with Windows10 it seems the opposite is true. Still, DD gives NO disadvantages (and from all accounts, sometimes runs better) so you should be fine.

Thanks for answer!

By the way, Kathy Rain works fine with Direct3d 9 driver..

Could someone explain how to change to DD to get this to play on W10? Not changing my NVIDIA drivers.

Just go to setup when launching and select DirectDraw5 on the driver droplist

You can also continue playing it on Direct3D using windowed mode instead of fullscreen

Same here, latest nvidia drivers breaks not only shardlight but all AGS games using Direct3D. They all give a black screen. I hate nVidia sometimes.

Hello all,

I don't know much about DirectDraw5 settings so I was hesitant to use the solution offered above. However, I think I found a simpler (for me at least) solution. I am running Windows 10 post Creators Update and I got the black screen issue as soon as I started Shardlight but I fixed the issue by changing the compatibility mode in the properties of the Shardlight application (steamapps\common\Shardlight) to Windows 8. That fixed the black screen issue and I could play with no problems. The game doesn't play in widescreen (ie black boxes on either side of screen) but that is a minor issue compared to not being able to see anything. I did this for the Shardlight demo but I would imagine it would work just as well on the full game version. Hopefully people find this alternative solution useful!

*Edit - Wanted to note that I am running Windows 10 post Creators Update.

I submitted a request to both nvidia and to AGS to try to fix this. Hope one of them will listen.

That actually works :) Thank you so much for the tip. This problem is applicable to all the other AGS games I have tried like Al Emmo or Technobabylon, and the fix works on those games too.

You are very welcome Optimusprime! It is good to hear you have found the fix works for Al Emmo or Technobabylon as well. Soon after posting my above comment I got the black screen issue on Downfall: Redux and the Windows 8 compatibility fix worked for that game as well. Considering the number of games this black screen issue affects, I am glad there is an easy fix.

Worked for me also, thanks! I used compatibility with Windows 7, and works on The Shivah too, probably in all wadget eye games
