Just go to setup when launching and select DirectDraw5 on the driver droplist
I don't know much about DirectDraw5 settings so I was hesitant to use the solution offered above. However, I think I found a simpler (for me at least) solution. I am running Windows 10 post Creators Update and I got the black screen issue as soon as I started Shardlight but I fixed the issue by changing the compatibility mode in the properties of the Shardlight application (steamapps\common\Shardlight) to Windows 8. That fixed the black screen issue and I could play with no problems. The game doesn't play in widescreen (ie black boxes on either side of screen) but that is a minor issue compared to not being able to see anything. I did this for the Shardlight demo but I would imagine it would work just as well on the full game version. Hopefully people find this alternative solution useful!
*Edit - Wanted to note that I am running Windows 10 post Creators Update.
That actually works :) Thank you so much for the tip. This problem is applicable to all the other AGS games I have tried like Al Emmo or Technobabylon, and the fix works on those games too.
Worked for me also, thanks! I used compatibility with Windows 7, and works on The Shivah too, probably in all wadget eye games
