controllers dont work in this game
tried PS3 controller and it doesnt work, interesting that GOG 2010 version works without problems

The 2015 Edition only supports XInput controllers (my Xbox 360 Controller works perfectly whereas my DirectInput joystick does nothing).

As noted, the 2010 Edition didn't have this limitation.
