Title screen freeze
Just got the game and made multiple attempts to run it, sadly to no avail. Of course it's the remastered edition from the steam store.

Whenever I start the game I'm greeted with the startup screen with three options "New Game", "Options" and "Quit", and it instantly freezes. Can't click a thing - "Program not responding".

Tried everything and I have no idea what else can I do. Tried compatibility modes, turning off desktop compositions and whatnot.
I have OpenAL installed.
My OS is Windows XP SP3.

Same problem here, I'm also running Win XP SP3. Couldn't find a fix either. Let's hope somebody knows more than we could find out and help. :D
Same problem....sad sad. Still nobody knows?
I have installed steam and the game on my XP Home SP3 laptop and it works there. I have no clue what may the freeze be caused by, so I'll give some more detail about my hardware & software on the problematic computer. Maybe there is something common here.

Nvidia GeForce 6800 XT, driver version 175.19
3 GB RAM (over half of it is free when running)
Screen resolution 1280x1024 (freezes windowed though)
Zone Alarm Firewall
Avast Antivirus
Gigabyte mainboard & utils (running at system startup)
Onboard Gigabyte audio & Sound manager running
OpenAL Installed (the one from the game directory)
DirectX 9.0c
here:

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT (2x, SLI), driver version 6.14.13.0142
2 GB RAM
Screen resolution 1920x1080 (game starts and freezes windowed)
Avira Free Antivirus
Realtek AC97 Audio
OpenAL installed (from the game directory, I also downloaded it manually after I encountered this problem)
DirectX 9.0c
Some commentary down on page write about OpenAL...hm does it works with it or no ?
It doesn't even start without OpenAL (missing dll error). It starts with OpenAL, but for some of us it just freezes on the title screen.

The computer I got it working on is an Asus eeePC 1000HD running WinXP Home with all Service Packs and updates, also Avast antivirus, no firewall, no nVidia card, and really nothing special. The hardware specs are here: http://www.cnet.com/laptops/asus-eee-pc-1000hd/4507-3121_7-33444610.html

And it runs. It just works. I guess I just gotta upgrade to Windows 7 on my PC and see if it works then. Been putting it off for way too long, and Steam Big Picture is another benefit. ;)
I'll let you guys know how it works once I get on Win7. Meanwhile I have no clue how to get it working otherwise.

I've got the same problem. Isn't there any method to solve this problem? Mabe we shall write to Revolution Software?
We shall write to Brussel to "Lampstation", but I do not think it will help :(
All I can say is that after installing Windows 7 32bit as a secondary OS, and installing the game on it (reinstalled Steam and re-downloaded) it works just fine. Although when I try it on my old XP, it's still the same - freezes on title screen.
It's pretty hard to say what's causing the problem, and I believe the software's creators won't be able to do much unless they can reproduce this problem on their machines AND manage to track down it's cause...

Have you tried running the game on different computers or a different operating system?
Maybe try it on a virtual machine (virtualbox perhaps)?
I have new comp for 3 weeks (with everything newly instaled ofcourse) but dont try play this game again. Tomorow I will try...

I had the same problem and resolve it by setting the sound to no acceleration (lower value) in the dxdiag config on my old XP.
I'm playing the game on Windows7 Ultimate Edition SP1 and it works perfectly fine here...Just to let you guys know if it can help.

This helped for me too! Zarkhas probably has the solution for all the XP sp3 users! Thanks Zarkhas!
