How to window Patrician 3
does anyone know how to force Patrician 3 into windows mode? I would really like to have the game and my spreadsheet next to each other on my screen. I have attempted DxWnd but i could not get it to work. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It says it's for Patrician 2, but it works for 3 as well.

Basically, what you need to do is:

  • download {LINK REMOVED}.
  • extract the archive to your Patrician 3 install folder.
  • run "DirectX Windower.exe" as an administrator (everytime you want to play windowed).
  • Click on the blue plus.
  • Select the "Patrician3.exe" from the install folder.
  • Click once on the Patrician3 in the list, then click on the second to last button on the top (the yellow "Settings..." one).
  • On the Common tab, set the "Height" setting to the width of the window you want, and the "Width" setting to the height. Width and height are reversed for some reason.
  • at the "DLL" line, click "Browse..." and select the "D3dHook.dll" from the install directory.
  • On the Window Mode tab enable "DDraw Emulate".
  • On the Foreground Control tab enable "Use Foreground Control"
  • Click on "OK", then double click on the Patrician3 in the list.

I also disabled the videos by renaming the "blinkplay.exe" to "blinkplay.bak", since the videos played fullscreen no matter the settings. It's worth noting that it works well with Raydell's Custom Resolutions.

Worked for me! Super!

I just tried this solution in Windows 8.1 and it doesn't work anymore :(

What I did to play Patrician III in windowed mode (a little bit overkill):
1. Installed free Virtualbox - https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
2. Installed Win7 inside Virtualbox.
3. Install Virtualbox Addons* into Win7 inside Virtualbox (for window scaling).
4. Installed Patrician III into Win7 inside VirtualBox.
5. Launched Patrician III. Profit!

* Do not install 3D Acceleration with Virtualbox Addons, because you will get Win7 stuck at 32bit color depth, and the game won't start as the main menu of Patrician III runs only at 16bit color depth.

You could also try VMWare (not freeware) to get even better windowed mode.

Your a real hero bro. This thread was dead for over a year and you saved it.

I figured it out. I run Windows 10, use DxWnd, make sure Legacy mode is supported in Windows (see here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxi/comments/3ly0dz/windows_10_with_windower/) and use these settings: https://simfileshare.net/download/1006218/ which you can import into DxWnd.

I hope this works for some of you.

Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. Neither with original nor the resolution patch :(

Thank you. It really works. I'm using Windows 11 and my Legacy Mode is already checked.
I will explain the steps I did in more detail for future users' reference.

1. Make sure your Legacy Mode is supported and your DirectPlay is checked. (you can find tutorials on the web on how to check). Many users already have this on.
2. Download DxWnd (https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/) and unzip the file.
3. Download the file Mr. scibirg shared ( https://simfileshare.net/download/1006218/ )
4. Open DxWnd (with Run as ADMIN) and import the downloaded file (called Patrician III.dxw)
Now this is IMPORTANT
5. On the DxWnd window, right click the newly generated Patrician III icon, then click modify.
6. On the Modify window, Make sure that the Path and Launch points to the actual Patrician III. exe on the game's directory. (something like this Steam\steamapps\common\Patrician III\Patrician3.exe) My library isn't on the default drive path.
7. Check the Early Hook inside the general box then press OK to save.
8. Now you can run the game by double-clicking that small patrician IIi icon inside dxwnd.

I made it work with these steps. I'm not tech-savvy so I don't know what, why, and how it works. I just tinkered with it, and it works, so it's good enough for me. The credit belongs to all of them.

Edit: After much testing, I still don't recommend it. As it's buggy and makes the game ugly at times. Maybe because DxWnd is still in beta? In any case, I can't recommend it yet.

I use D3dwindower v1.88 [community.pcgamingwiki.com] on my windows 11 to run game in windowed mode. D3dwindower is an old program so winxp capability and admin rights needs to be applied in properties before launch. Just add Patrician3.exe with plus simbol, set path to D3dHook.dll for DLL path in settings and you good to go. High resolution packs also work with this emulator, i play mine Patrician 3 on 1920x1080 and game never crashes when i alt-tab anymore.

Is there any way to change the size of the window that D3Dwindower produces? I can get the game to start up in the app fine, but I would like to get the window size closer to full screen.

Yes there is, you can follow this guide and apply game's resolution of your choice. Only main ingame resolution is changed, not the menu.

I did follow that guide and am able to run the game in my monitors native resolution without D3dwindower. When I use D3d, however, it will run at about 75 percent of the size of my monitor and I'm not sure how to get that closer to full size.
