You get better ships if you have the stuff though - I experimentally checked on one save. I gathered all the goods then saved just long enough before that I could ship the goods out on ships, I got 2 damaged snaikkas and a reasonable amount of goods. I then restarted the same save where I had the goods ready to ship out but this time I left them there, I ended up with a crayer and more goods than before. I suspect the trick is knowing where to buy the goods cheaply and being sufficently prepared as I started a new save file to test this quite a while back.
Indeed, thats true - I suspect I might be a little more impatient as I focus on pirating a fleet then pirating towns till I start getting permissions to build in other towns.
for a successful wedding (or celebration) you need the following per 1000 people in the town
beer 20
fish 2
meat 2
wine 20
grain 3
honey 10
no other items in town have an effect on the success of your wedding ( ie. salt and spice are not required)
I've received a cog and crayer filled with skins meat etc on a successful party and much less at other times amount of ships you have can change the ships you get also. Items on board dowery ships are influenced by the hometown of your wife.
get married early while your Population is low and do it right. if you pick up a cog and or a crayer filled with items it will more than pay for the food you supply. remember to hold amounts of stock or turn off warehouse till after the wedding or celebration. I think the game tries to compensate your losses so more population requiring more food will yield better ships and Cargo generally.
personally outside of the wedding I don't hold celebrations very often.
