Windows 10 - my kingdom for a solution
I've tried many suggested solutions with no avail, and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at Steam won't refund. I cannot get the game to run on a Windows 10 laptop. Any advice most welcome please.
Thanks

Try fiddling with the compatability settings, if that fails then I recommend my old standby method of changing each option and testing it. So far I've made every game work using it the latter method if all other methods have failed.

Error messages? What happens when you click "Play"? Does it start at all and then crash or does it literally not run at all?

More details or we can't give any advice lol.

Right click on Patrician 3 in your Library, select properties, then find "browse local files" and click on it. From there do two things:

1. Run P3Setup and test resolutions. I run all of them, to be safe.

2. Right click on Patrician3, go to Compatibility tab, find Compatibility mode, then check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select an earlier version of Windows. Most people use Windows XP or Windows 7.

This worked for me, although I still get weird screen resolution switches when trying to save a game. But the game is playable.

Yes, to add on to this comment: if the game starts up and the screen looks absolutely messed up, distorted and discolored, ignore it completely, start your game, and it turns completely normal in the actual game!

Don't let the funky graphical effects in the menus scare you away from this game lol

Find game folder, find the game running file, properties, run in compatibility mode for win xp sp2.
The only problem is for pause and unpause you have to be patient and wait a few seconds of flashing screens to finish and dont try minimizing the game window without saving.

Delete or rename the "binkplay.exe"... e.g. "binkplay_.exe" and it should instantly boot you into the main menu

What worked for me was:

Use the Patrician High Resolution Mod:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/33570/discussions/0/35221584425332491/
Pick the resolution you want. You have to use the .exe from the mod.

Make a shortcut to the Patrician 3 executable (Patrician3.exe)
Append the following to the target of the shortcut:
/norescheck
OR go to your Steam Library and right click Patrician, Properties, Set Launch Options and put:
/norescheck
there. Now you can just run Patrician from Steam.

Run P3Setup.exe and test all x32 resolutions, make sure they're set to OK.
GoG.com has a registry file that does this automatically, but you can use P3Setup:
https://support.gog.com/hc/en-us/articles/212451369-The-resolution-800x600x16-could-not-be-initialised

That did it for me. Mostly the combination of the non-Steam .exe and /norescheck

Hi folks
Thank you all for your comments and apologies for the delay in attempting them. Unfortunately real life got in the way of game-time.
I have tried all of these work-around solutions and none appear to work. No matter what I attempt, I get the following dialogue box (i can't see a way to attach a screen shot): "Patrician 3: The resolution (800x600x16) could not be initialised. Please install the latest driver for your video card and then start the P2Setup.exe program."
Any further suggestions are most welcome.
Thanks

Do exactly that. Manually update your video driver (automatic does not always select the correct driver) then reboot your computer to be sure that the driver is properly updated. Verify or re-install the Patrician III files and start the P2Setup.exe program. When you get to 800x600x16 make certain that you exclude it as an option (even if it works that time) because you know it doesn't work correctly. Also go through and manually update your drivers after a windows 10 update. About 1/2 the time there is a windows 10 update my drivers have all been set to ones that don't work properly with my system settings because Windows can't seem to get things right.

Thank you knighttemplar1960. I shall google how to do this :)

My drivers are totally up to date, and I have the very same error messages.
Why does it mention P2setup ? It's P3 right ?

Ok I got this to run on Windows 10:
- Apply HD Mod
- Run P3Setup.exe and accept all resolutions
- Set compatibility mode as suggested by Windows 10 (in my case Windows sp3)
- Apply the /norescheck to Steam launcher
- Launch and play, you're all done :summer2019boost:
