3 or 2 never 4. 4 does not use warehouses for builds, you have to sell to the market.
4 is just not the same game.

3 is trickier to get working, but should be available cheaper on either Gog or Steam; and I think there are a few other threads on the forum here on how to do that. It's also the better game.

My understanding was that Patrician 2 was very similar to 3, just with fewer scenarios? Are there any other differences?

I think P2 german version with all the patches became P3 english version. Mostly bugfixes and increase in the amount of money you can hold in total.

Patrician 3, no doubt. It's older, but it has more features, better naval combat and the management/economic aspect is harder so it's more of a challenge. Patrician 4 is dumbed down to oblivion, it's impossible not to do well in P4 while in P3 you'll actually require to have a solid strategy to succeed.

I believe a couple differences between 2 and 3 could be slight variations for automatic trading routes and also 3 added the land route. 3 is the best experience. I don't know what they were thinking when 4 was made.

"How can we make this worse?" which to be fair seems to be the thought process behind many modern games.

Was the land route ever really viable compared with sending a ship back and forth? I never really used it much.

No, I believe it is mainly for building materials but I never use it. I can understand it in the early stages because they take up a lot of room. 2 also crashed a lot and the graphics were not as sharp. When this game first came out I was on Windows 98 second edition lol.

Patrician 3 without any doubt.
And yes, Patrician 3 is for international; in fact it's Patrician 2 with a patch, in Germany, if i'm not wrong.
