how do I trigger painless mode

I noticed that was one of the features and I'd like to see how it triggers, and test difficulty, I wanna gift this game to someone who likes good story but sometimes gameplay doesn't work out

Also does it affect achievements

early in the game the tutorial npc gives you a key item you can use at will to permanently enable it

ah thank you, good to know. Who knows once I get through on painless and get an idea of the story, and enemies and maybe new stuff. might try to get the painful achievement...or I don't know maybe not and just ♥♥♥♥♥ about censorship or something LOL
