An fyi if you're trying to get the joyless ending
As far as I can tell, you cannot use Joy, period. Not just not on Brad, but on none of your party members. My first playthrough I never used it on Brad, but I did use it on some other guys, and I got the Joyful ending.

I think I used joy one time early in the game, though I still got Joyless. Although I may have reloaded that save.

The Joyless ending is A LOT harder it seems like. I only got the Joyless ending and never used it except for in the beginning, but I loaded.

My suggestion if you are going for the Joyless ending, do not use any other characters that require Joy. Make it only be Brad.

But I love Buckets :(

You can use him, it is probably harder though.

Eh, some of the better party members use Joy (such as Carp). It's not that big of a deal since it will wear off after a bit, and status effect causing skills are unaffected.

Thanks for the info, I was really wondering about this, since I was hoping to do a joyless run soon (I used joy exactly twice and got Joyful on my first run. Based on what EnixSquared2.0 said above, I'm guessing exactly one use may be safe for joyless, but 2 is gonna get you Joyful).

Another thing that heals withdraw is resting, so you can use that to control the joy addiction to some extent, but that obviously won't help when it hits in the middle of a dungeon, heh.

Combos gets rid of the Joy addiction. Not permanently, but it makes it go away for a while. Sleeping makes it go away for an extremely short time. Like it goes away for less than ten minutes, sometimes it comes back immediately.

I'm near the end and haven't used joy once. Based on the game's theme, I kinda figured early on that using drugs would be bad. Combo's still do good damage, and just made sure I knew where I could rest it off. Never really been a problem.

Do any of the cutscene based joy things influence this. I've never used it on anyone, but I did go into the warehouse and they force-fed me some. Additionally I think one of the outdoor resting events makes you take some as well as don the joyface mask.

It shouldn't; there's at least one completely unavoidable scene where Brad takes Joy. Just don't use the Joy item.

I got joyless easily. The companions I used were Birdie, Harvey, and Nern

This thread is more than a year old!

yeah, but the difficulty of the game hasn't changed in a year.

Birdie makes the game super easy tbh.

Well I got one question...
I have already finished the game 2 times, first time I use joy like a real addict; but my second play I didn't use any pill.... so why I don't get the Joyless achievement? Can someone explain me?...
Of course in one of the scenes, buzzo makes me eat 3 pills of joy in front of Buddy... but come on, does that count?
Or is because I hold some joy on my inventory but without using them.
