Sweetheart Mutant's identity
Is it possible that sweetheart was yado's wife? I mean, can they mutate after death? If they could, it would make sense that sweetheart was yado's wife.

Yup, that seems to be the popular consensus! We've seen a lot of Joy users turn after they died. Brad only turned after collapsing from all his wounds in the Painful, same with Buzzo in the Joyful. So it does seem like Sweetheart could be Yado's wife, and it would definitely explain her name.

And also, mutant buddy looks a lot like sweetheart.

Yes, its Buddy's mom, in fact, Sweetheart protected Buddy 2 times in The Joyful.

I thought so initially, but after some thought that doesn't seem to make much sense, really. Brad sees Yado's wife in the joy lab in Painful, which means if the joy abomination was her she must have been very, very recently dead in Painful (Nobody else we see mutate takes long at all after death). I'm not sure if that timeline matches very well with what else we know about Yado.

Yeah but she also had a suicide note and in the joyful it is revealed that she was killed by yado. It's probably just that ding changed plans from one game to another or something, so some things may not make obvious sense.

That could have just been Yado covering up his murder, prior to the entire lab staff turning into abominations. That's what I assumed anyway.

Of course you may be right, but your explanation could be used to explain a lot of things.

Doesn't is specify that "she died recently"?

Ok, has anyone else seen Yado call that mutant 'baby' instead of sweetheart? I could've swore he did on my last run.

Does it? I don't have a hardmode save to verify but I only recall it saying it's usual ambiguous "Dead" or "She's dead" remark.

It looks like Sweeheart is Yado's wife, because :

- Female mutants are much taller and stronger, we can see that when Buddy turns
- Her hair similar as the wife we find in the lab in the Painful
- She saves Buddy twice

Though there is something I dont understand. At the very end she still fought Buddy. Is the Yado's trumpet control THAT specific ? Why would he do that to her anyways since he wants her to help him rule... I dont get it.

*Various Spoilers*
I do believe sweetheart is female, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's her mother. I think it was Yado ordering her to save Buddy moreso than her just saving Buddy on her own.
And Yado doesn't want Buddy to help him rule, indeed he was expecting her to either die or turn into a joy abomination at the end of it all. He just wanted her to help clear the world of regular, non-joy mutated humans. That way he could just control his abominations in peace (we do know the majority of the leaders we kill were killing off the mutants).

You have a point, though all of the other mutants have "normal" names, like Harry, Louis, etc... It would be very strange to have THAT mutant called sweetheart just because its female. Now that I think of it, Yado mentionned a daughter called Nancy, even though people seem to believe Nancy is Buddy... To be sure about the identity of Sweetheart we would have to be sure of Buddy's identity IMO. Because I wouldnt see why he would call someone Sweetheart if its not a close person

Fair point. It is possible that Sweetheart is just Yado's personal favourite though; he does consistently refer to the abominations as his children so maybe the fact that Sweetheart is seemingly his go-to mutant could make her special.
I do agree your points make it ambiguous though.

Your theory works as well, he calls them children. thought since he doesnt look very sentimental about his wife and daughter, but still calling them children doesnt stop him from piling them up and sitting on top, so ... not sure about this

Edit, sorry, this answers not clear at all because english is not my native language . I apologize for my grammar ^^

He calls her "baby" before the fight with Buddy. During the fight though her name is "Sweetheart"
