I played and finished the game a few years back, I loved it.
now a definitive edition has been released, is it worth playing again?

I'd say it's worth playing the game again regardless, just because it's a strong enough game with enough variety in party members to be worth replaying. As for the new changes in definitive version, they're unfortunately not super drastic.

The Battle UI is different, you can mount the bike without going in the menu. The new campfire conversations are phenomenal, but there's not very many of them and they're easy to miss. There is a pretty huge new sequence, but it's a secret at the very tail end of the game and is brutally difficult.

So basically, if you're looking for an excuse to play the game again, the definitive edition is a good way to do it. But it's not a hugely new adventure or anything.

Could you please divulge some information on this new content? I'm personally not trying to play the game another 4 times to get to the new content so I was wanting to know how to get the new stuff. For one, do the campfire conversations trigger regardless of party members? Or are there ones specific to each member? The huge new sequence you mentioned is part of which ending? Is it the Joyful or Joyless, or does it not matter. Also do you know if there's any new content/gimmicks in the new painless mode or if it just decreases enemy stats. If you could just tell me all things you know, without revealing specifics, that would be great.

Painful: If you savescum to ensure sure you get and keep all 30 party members you can see and do everything new in one single playthrough. Both normal mode and pain mode are fine (but obviously normal mode will be less frustrating). Campfire scenes are party member-specific and at least one campfire scene requires you to have taken some joy. The new content isn't a new ending but a side area that brings you back to the main game once finished.

Joyful: You must not take any joy to be able to complete all new content.

No one has reported anything exclusive to painless mode from what I've seen.

just beat joyfyl without using any joy, couldn't notice anything different or new. any hints to where such content could be found?

It's really obtuse, you will most likely need to follow this guide.
