The only thing you can use to directly reduce the chance of perma-kill moves is using certain disabling ailments. Mostly stuff like stun/paralysis/fallen, since each turn they can't attack will be one less turn they have to use an insta-kill move. Another, longer-lasting way to disable their insta-kills is the p1ssed (gotta write it that way due to Steam filters) status effect, since that always lasts for multiple turns, and forces the enemy to only attack. It also buffs the enemy's crit chance by 50% though, so it can be risky in other ways (especially since many enemies with perma-kill moves will also hit hard to begin with).
No. When an enemy decides to use a permanent-kill attack, it automatically hits and for 9999 damage and inflicts Dead on any party member other than Brad. There is no way to avoid it, it just happens when it happens. There are four of these moves, but they all do the same thing, in the same way (which... is kind of boring). The only thing you can do is be a cheap bastard and status lock/spam cheap moves (such as using Dirty Water to inflict poison) and kill as fast as possible. Against Joy Mutants and Bosses, just don't hold anything back. Period.
