How do I open up the main menu on my laptop? (No, the F1 key doesn't work.)
Sorry for this question. My F1 key is binded to muting the system volume by default.

As I still can't figure out a way to open up the menu other than supposedly pressing the F1 key, I'll have to refund this. I can't save, view options, or anything. Very counter-intuitive, at least for my laptop.
Did you try pressing esc?

If you have a laptop with system functions bound to the function keys you should have an "FN" key on your keyboard somewhere on the bottom row.
All you have to do is hold FN as you press F1.

Yes. The Esc key only works in gameplay; it cancels an action, or something like that.

Thanks for that. I'll withdraw my refund request for now and test this out. I'll update in a while.

The Esc key (or X, which has the same function) doesn't only cancel, it's also the key for the in-game menu (where you access items, equipment, and such). This in-game menu isn't possible to open immediately though, since you need to get past the initial prologue (which takes 10-20 minutes) and get to the actual gameplay/exploration part of the game first. The F1 menu is different, and is more for changing some technical things, like visual options. If you're happy with the game's default settings, you shouldn't need to use that F1 menu at all.

Yes, the F1 menu is essential. There's no way I can save or properly exit the game otherwise. Besides, I do want to see the technical settings of this game so that I could optimize this game the best I can with my low-specs laptop.

Yeah basically all laptops require you to hold the 'Fn' key to use the function keys (f1). In the options you can rebind the keys to your liking though. SO you could just change it to one of the function keys without holding the 'Fn' key by binding it that way. Also you shouldn't have to worry about optimatization with this game. I Imagine any latop made in the last 10 years will get 100fps from this game.

Nope, it's not essential. Saving is done via save points in the game, which are simply ravens sitting on stands that you find all around the game, then examine when you want to save. As for exiting the game, that can actually be done via the in-game menu (accessed with X or Esc), or by simply pressing alt + F4.

The F1 menu does have some useful options that you may want to use, like keyboard rebinding, window resizing (aside from the simple fullscreen/windowed toggle you can always do via alt + enter), vertical sync and frame skipping in case you run into slowdown. Most of these settings are also only in the default mode the game runs in. If you run in Legacy mode (which is just the game running in the default RPG Maker VX Ace engine without any addons; less settings you can potentially tweak, but it runs better for some people, worse for others), the F1 menu has even less options.

Assuming the game runs fine for you and you don't have any issues with the default game resolution or controls (as was the case with me), there's really nothing you need in the F1 menu, which is what I was pointing out; I never bothered using any of the options in the F1 menu myself. I still hope you're able to get the F1 menu to work though, in case you do want to make use of any of those options.

It's also worth mentioning, that apart from the keybindings, everything in the F1 menu can be changed using launch options or the file mkxp.conf in the mkxp folder, as described the corresponding section in the technical FAQ, that is pinned to the top of the forums: https://steamcommunity.com/app/335670/discussions/0/622954747297621964/
