Just checked, Starflight is not on steam, but Star Control is.
It would actually be pretty cool if they added some features of starflight into this game though... Ill have to put something in the suggestion box...
Gazillionaire
The X series is also somewhat similar, as well as Starpoint Gemini (2, and Warlords in particular). Similar ideas, just completely different approaches and gameplay.
I don´t know if they are on Steam, but you can find them at GOG for sure.
There's also more tangential games like the Star Wolves series, and such.
I have played far too many space games.
But if you want a sort of action RPG spaceship sort of game, check out Star Valor. It's an awesome game, and hats off to the dev.

However, a similar game that comes to mind would be Starsector. It's not on steam yet sadly
I think 3 was the best

than 1

the second part was not so good

But as they are now all on sale, you could just get them all for around 3.- and decide,
The problem is, that the battles are RTS and not roundbased
FTL 10/10 game
Games where you manage a starship trader
Starsector (Not on steam, for sale directly through their website while in "early access")
Freelancer (considered a classic, no crew though)
Starpoint Gemini 2
Everspace 2 (everspace 1 isn't open world, still fun)
Elite Dangerous
No Man's Sky
games where you manage a crew in a very "alive" "evolving" open world
Kenshi. Amazing game. Not space.
