In the beginning you'll do mostly package delivery quests, so engine speed ist important.
I make about 1million credits in the first 3 years, so I can buy a new ship quickly (and mod it to my needs).
Oh yeah, hmm, I never really considered engine speed being an important factor for early mission running, which you're right is usually how I earn my first million.
I looked up the Vindex and the Longbolt on the shipbuilder. Vindex has more armor and better speed, but lower nav/electronics dice pools. Think I'd prefer the Longbolt between the two of them, despite the lower armor. Think I'd take the skill pools.
Why?
Because I don't fight with my first ship. I use it to run missions, and while doing so I am very careful not to upset anyone. Flying a decrepit crate reduces the temptation to get into a fight.
As soon as I get enough cash for an upgraded Wolf Vector/Sword Cutter, I move into that, and by then, I fear nothing crewed by humans for at least 30-40 years.
While engine speed is relevant for combat at range 5/4, it's also the travel speed on the map.
Faster ship = more missions = more credits in the "same time" a slower ship only gets half of that done.
So a Reach Vindex with 27 speed is nearly twice as fast as a Fidelis Cutter with 15 speed. Sadly the speed isn't given on the template builder...

Suspicious.
Fixed.
I see what you mean here. I took a look at these ships, and I really like the look of the Wolf Vector. Even though it's $140k pricier, I like that it already has the cargo hold/warp drive/engine upgraded, so you don't have to spend like half a year upgrading those. You can leave them be, upgrade the other components and have a nice little versatile fighting ship, yeah. Might try it out on my next run!
I use it on my mission runner / spy captain, and I can confirm it's a nice ship. As a Spy I don't care about cargo-space. It's fast, agile, and with it's 5/30 crew you have enough space to stack command and / or specialists.
Correct, speed is an Engine statistic for standard void space travel. It does not affect hyperwarp jumps.
it was never supposed to in the beginning, as you can read in the link I've share sooner...

Not a bad starting ship especially if you want to stay in the starting ship longer then you should. It's good to mix things up every now and then.
Had no problem with higher level Green Xeno

Here is what my Degla looked around mid game but the pic is from end game however I was in a SBC at the time.

I try never to do 2 runs the same way back to back. If I was in an E ship then my next run I might go opposite and start with A ship. If I had a non combat captain then my next run might be full xeno hand to hand captain.
Same thing about stories and missions. If you are always doing all the stories and missions. Take a run off and just do you own thing.
Longboat and Degla Megalift are also great picks. Not a fan of any other starter ship.
I always set Ship to C. Degla needs A.
