Let's talk about some details and I am sure we can help you.

-- What OS? What OS version?
-- If Windows, did Steam successfully automatically install the MS Visual C++ Redistributable 2012 x86 prereq? It should, but worth checking.
-- No error message or anything?

A few specifics about your platform would go a long way to helping us get next steps.

@Fish_Shark - well, that is unfortunately a Steam Client screw up then. You can install the prereq yourself manually. Sorry, this does happen from time to time.

Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4 -- specifically x86.

No worries!

Hopefully, that helps. If that doesn't, I will be asking if you have a RealTek Audio chipset. Some of these have an issue with STF when their drivers aren't updated. Those are about the only two known issues that can cause the game to fail to start.

I have a 2016 Asus with Core I7, 965m Nvidia card. And I too am having troubles starting the game. i went to the windows site and got the 2012 stuff and put it in. it still only starts for a second then crashes.

Does the crash reporter pop up? If so, can you be sure to send in a crash report and include your email.

Do you have Realtek audio device? If so, try disabling it. That's a quick test to see if your hardware + driver is causing the issue. If it is, you can look for the generic Windows driver for the device instead of the buggy Realtek one.

Perfect! We'll take a look at the crash report.
