You can also use the talents "Blood Game" (bounty hunter) or "Boarding Assault" (gunner) to board from range 5 and 3 respectively
Hope this helps!
Boarding can achieved 1 of 2 ways --
1) Move to range 1. The movement menu will switch from Advance to Board! You can board repeated turns this way.
2) Get a Boarding Talent -- Gunners have the easiest one to get, allowing boarding at range 3 or less. However, after use this Talent goes on Cooldown so you may need multiple Talents or to continue to try to get into range 1.
To win a combat with boarding, it usually requires 2-4 rounds of boarding, killing and destroying their ship components. Depends on how much ship combat you are willing to do in between rounds and what Boarding Victory Talents you've brought to the table.
