How to use carriers?

I know this might be a stupid question, but how do I use carriers? I bought the Basalt one, noticed that they come with some hangar bays installed already and hired some wing crew, but both the hangar bays and the crew have a little icon with a crossed ship on their top right corner. Do I need to buy smaller ships and assign them? If so, how am I supposed to do that?

Yes, you do need to buy some specific craft.

Visit a starport and click on the hangar. You'll get the option to buy a craft or change the component.

Thanks for the reply. It works now. Problem is, it wasn't very obvious that I needed to go to the Starport->Upgrade Ship->Click on the Hangar Icon to reach the menu to buy craft. Hovering the mouse over the hangar on the Ship Status screen or over the wing crew portrait gave no tooltips hints about it.
