Your crew Traits are partially determined by starting faction.
You start off in a trade ban however some systems are just better by default for trading. Better combo of planets and laws. Better Indy worlds. Or for explorers better wild zones.
Some systems are closer to far fallen rim system which is a key system in almost all my play through.
Yes starting traits if you want to reroll recruits. Only hopeful if you make lots of money quick and start off with several recruit contacts in your home system.
Is it listed in the wiki anywhere how these traits are affected by particular factions? I don’t want to get deep into my game with a Alta Mesa captain only to find out he gets gravity sickness (lore book).

This list is not exhaustive.
In practice, Cadar faction folks make great crew for higher difficulty because Durable (+25% vs death saves) gets sprinkled throughout. Also Scrappy and Steady. I have 2+ of each revealed in a crew of 24, and some probably still hidden.
Moklumme is where to go for high charisma folks, because some get a +3 to it and other complimentary bonuses.
Honestly, the easiest way to get a good sample of what a faction is like is to start a game with each, then go to your crew list and hit the middle button to sort by traits.
