The #1 thing you need to get hang of in the game is the profit loop. Being a Star Traders is expensive -- maintaining your ship, affording fuel, travel accidents, medical costs, spicing the crew to keep them happy not to mention paying wages. In order to keep flying, you've got to be able to bring in enough money to run these basic services on the regular. One great way to do this is to start the game and run early missions with Contacts. The first year, they will give short range missions that can help pad your bank roll. Another great way is to start trading locally and then buy some Trade Permits from your Contacts and work out a few trade routes that work to your advantage.
Early on, avoid combat. Taking a few torpedoes on the nose of your ship is very expensive.
Thank you for recommending these videos; I really liked the way they develop, although they are from earlier versions of the game and some things have changed. I have some idea now of what to do and I'll try venturing into the great space.
I do think that an in-game tutorial would be very useful, especially with the plethora of skills, the fact that you can start with rather experienced characters etc. I think it would help new players a lot.

For example, I accepted the mission to take the arbitrer to the prince's court. Followed the story (looks like an interesting intrigue) and agreed to take the follow-up mission, escort the arbitrer to a tour of some key locations in her investigation.
So far, so good.
But, I can't find a way to discover where I need to go now. How do I set a waypoint to my next destination? The arbitrer can't be found on the planet, and I have a new mission message but can't figure out how to take the next step.
Also, how do you figure out trade routes? Do I need to visit planets and see what the supply/demand is on the ground and keep notes? Bought some fuel on my initial destination, but the prince's court has fuel, so I'd have to sell with a loss. I don't mind taking a hit (it's just 50 credits) but I get a message about a trade ban that would hurt my reputation -possibly complicating the tour? I don't know, and can't find a way to figure it out.
Overall, it seems like there are tons of things you could do in the game (trade, spy, patrol, hunt aliens) and ship upgrades and stuff, but it feels like we're thrust into a huge world which we have to figure out on our own.
The cards, for example, when selecting patrol/blockage/spy. What do they do? What are the odds of getting a good result? Nothing is explained there.
Please consider an in-game tutorial, the game seems so interesting, but it's a struggle figuring it out, and it shouldn't be. It's a shame and you do your hard work an injustice.
I would recommend watching as many videos on YouTube and twitch as you can.

I've played way more complicated games then STF that had zero tutorials. They've gone the way of the manual. These are leftovers from yester-year.
Everything is about YouTube and twitch. Manuals, tutorials, advertising, word of mouth etc they've all been replaced.
Not saying it's a good or bad thing for the Industry it's just the current truth that gamers must come to accept.
That's why the AAA game producers release the game to big YouTubers weeks to months a head of time. They've usually Been to a studio or expo showcasing the game. They are the ones that then disseminate the game knowledge to the general public.
The ones recommended by the dev are very nicely done, but a bit outdated (showing stuff I don't see on my UI) and a current one I found (including small crafts) is a bit too advanced.
Anyway, I'll watch some more videos, maybe I'll get lucky and find answers to my questions.
It's a pity, though, it looks like a fine game with lots of depth, but it has an odd learning curve.

I'm not sure if there is a way to improve the odds, there were two green cards and 3 red.
Combat was ok, took some damage, dealt a lot more, in the end I crippled the engines of the other ship and won.
Most options cost me rep with my faction.
I'm still unable to figure out where to go with my main mission, I use the auto navigate and it returns me to the planet I'm orbiting, but with no new options there.
Anyway, I'll try various stuff and see what I can learn. I'll also try the videos you're recommending.
Card games -- increasing the odds -- whenever you want to do *anything* in the game, go looking for a Talent. There are a wide variety of Talents that can remove cards, reroll cards, change one card to another card, etc.

Trade routes are entirely something you much find on your own. Every map is different (unless you use the same seed). Looking at a resource will tell you what type of zones demand it, so that can help you make some basic decisions, but a merchant needs to travel, visit worlds and upgrading permits to be most successful.
Sounds like with the story mission that Calagan told you about the mission and added it to his list, but that you never looked at the list and accepted the mission. Missions are too complicated (payment, distance, steps, specifics) to ever force on a player in simple dialog. They are always added to the Contact's mission list for your further review.
