All of the classes are available to any captain. The ships behind unlocks are minor variants. I agree that some of the contacts behind unlocks are nice, and there may be some small bonuses to certain stats behind unlocks. But, I view these like achievements: nice to have but not "ruining" anything.
Yeah, unlocks can be annoying sometimes, but find the silver lining. There are tiny lessons that can be teased out of the achievements. I am a better captain thanks to the unlocks. I do think some of them are hard, but thats what really drives the learning.
Thank you for playing,
Cory
Great to hear it and hope that other players will look for these learning experiences in the challenge. Expert Contractor is a really good unlock to help starting players get their feet under them with making their first profits!
I do not mean to sound ungrateful or anything. At the end of the day you guys have created a great game.
If anything maybe tweak the unlock conditions to be more immersive? I know i am a new player but this is what i have done so far.
1. Tried a few builds out
2. Re started as pirate
3. Wanted blackheart
4. bought biggest ship and spammed blockade/bribe refuel repeat ( i did not learn anything or had fun doing this)
5. wanted vindex
6. made a melee captain
7. Spammed crew combat on 2-3 ships to unlock
8. Restarted.
Now i am thinking maybe i should ignore these unlocks and just play the game lol.
Same with press gang/privateer as a pirate.

I agree with the commenter above who said that the achievements are a great learning tool.
Please note this is a super old thread. In the meantime, the devs have introduced modding capability into the game. The way they did it, the modded game has everything unlocked and won't grant achievements. If your goal is to use the locked ships/classes, and you don't care so much about actually earning the achievements, try that. Details here:

Well, I can see both sides. Me, I kinda like to have all of my toys in my sandbox when I play and don't feel I should have to jump through hoops to access something I already paid for. This isn't a head to head competitive game, so why does it matter? The OP asked, "So does anyone know of hacks or cheats or anything to unlock everything?"
Answer: Yes. Reddit, Google.
If it was head to head, player vs player, then it would give an unfair advantage. And yes, any player who grinds his way through and does it "legally" deserves every kudo they receive.
If a player can research the question and find a third party tool to unlock "extra" ships in the game, that in some opinions should have been open by default, why wouldn't they? We pay for the game. We pay for the entire game. Give us the toys we purchased, don't make us jump through hoops for something that is already there.
At least they didn't make it, pay extra to get this ship on each ship and unlock.
"I did this, you didn't. You suck, git gud." - Random A*****e from competitive games.
I'm just happy that the Trese Brothers made a space trading game that I can enjoy some nostalgia of 1980's bbs Tradewars game.
Its a game. Its meant to be enjoyed. If you enjoy grinding out the locked features, by all means, enjoy your game. To me, that unnecessary grind is NOT enjoyable and apparently NOR to the OP.
It's similar to stellaris in this regard. Either you activate ironman mode, or you're barred from getting achievments. I think both games handle it fairly.
