In Sand box ,play style depend on your Island stability setting.
At easiest level ,you can expand far away from your palace and stockade.
You won't need pirate guard to protect you.
At Chaos level ,even setting facilities close won't prevent escape and rebellion.
You'll need a lot of pirate guard to protect your palace.
If rebel get into your palace then it's game over.

In the beginning ,readjust all of the road.
Set timber camp near thick forest ,not too far away from lumber mill.
Build another lumber mill because wood processing speed suck.
You'll need a lot of wood to decorate your island as fast as possible at high level.
There will be a lot of death otherwise.

Micro manage your worker if you don't have any spare.
If your choose to start Bare Bone ,that's a must.
Don't build brewery and other goods when you don't have stable income.
So you won't need hauler at Smuggler's dive ,Cheap eatery and other pirate service building.

Your first ship can be snow if you're going to rely on omnipotent smuggler's cove.
Go kidnap skilled trader and engineer to sell cannons.
If not ,get a Schooner.
Set plunder reward at miser.
You won't like it if your pirate rank up too fast at this point of game ,
and you'll need money more than them anyway.

Don't panic when you see your money go into minus.
Keep calm and play as safe as possible.
Only send your ship to plunder after you explore that area to Very familiar seas level ,at least.
It'll lower the chance of losing your ship and its entire crew.
Read ship log every times your ship come back from plunder to see ship type in that area.
If there's nothing ,remember that area ,switch to plunder other area.
When you get a successful plunder ,change area to where you get nothing.
Area you land a hit will have lower merchant ship and increase navy of that nation.
Traffic in this game move around.
The increase of navy in one place will lower navy in other area ,for example.

AND ALWAYS HAVE cutlasses on your ships.
Even if you're using Pound'em or Harass'em ,
you'll be forced to use Cutlasses and Musket to fight if enemy board your ship.
Board'em will force another ship to use Board'em too.
So without Cutlasses ,it's straight lose.
