Mostly I prefer to manually battle but I may also use Auto Battle in some extraordinary cases just for that
Example: QJ Spams her Ult uselessly
You'll be playing Manual more against Bosses or specific Objective Missions than Autobattle.
The other problem with many gachas that use Auto is that manual doesn't really become necessary until way late in the game, if at all, meaning that you might spend many hours effectively watching the game play itself before you're finally matched with content in a game that requires you to, you know...actually PLAY it. So I'm usually wary of Auto battle. In my mind, the only way to really do it right is to use it for fights on which you've already completed manually and you are just grinding.
As you said, it is easier to use the Auto Battle but it doesn't have the "charm" in it (at earlier stages I believe) as Manual Battle has but for grinding yes you can better use the Auto.
At the end, it is there just for anyone who may want to use it or not
I only use it to clear weaker maps while reading the story, but beyond that i wouldn't rely on it too much.
theres an auto farm skip for free once you completed certain farming run content.
never auto battle your platoon and challenge mission because the enemies scale with your levels and your dolls prefer to go rambo solo.
