Mech games in general...
...I've never understood why (and I've played mech games since the original Mechwarrior) mech games insist on having jump jets...I dunno...it's kind of an immersion breaker for me.
I love to stomp around in a large mech with a ♥♥♥♥♥ load of tech, firepower and armour...but flying around in a 50 ton mech??.
I would like to see a decent mech game (especially in VR) that was more akin to tank warfare where you use the terrain rather than jump over it.
If anyone knows if such a game exists?
Anyways...just my 2 pennies worth.
Regards

I think it came from Japanese "Mechs" which are more large "Suits" which fly around.

I prefer the American version of "Mechs" which are more like heavy tank-robots.

Not a VR game but you can try Blazing Core.

There's another VR "mech" game in development that's all about operating a spider-like tank that's set in the 50's that may have that much more hardcore element you're looking for. I'm pretty sure it's strickly an on-the-ground kind of experience, so no jumpjets. The trouble is, they haven't updated their status in over 1/2 a year and I don't remember the name of the game atm.

Even 'western-style' mechs (best example I can give is Battletech) have jump jets. Walking tanks as a viable alternative to a normal tank already requires suspension of disbelief, so why not let them jump?

You're probably talking about Panzerwehr 1949

I would actually have to agree with this. It seems kind of confusing to me how a mech which has half of its entire body built around a giant pair of legs that barely work and yet the tiny jump jets on the back can blast you through the air like a fighter jet.

I've only done a couple of matches so far but I've already seen people get their legs blown off and simply do the rest of the match with no legs flying around with seemingly no hindrance. This seems a bit counterintuitive to a Mech game.

Losing your legs sheds off a significant amount of weight, making the boosters more effective. Weither that actually happens in-game or not i can't say for sure but it would make sense.

In a world where they have huge battlemechs it doesn't seem that far fetched that they would have technology to make a powerfull booster in small-ish form factor.

I can confirm that your Jumpjets become more and more effective as your grinder loses its heavy limbs. In fact, with some of the lighter grinders such as Hopper, once you lose a few limbs you can actually stay in the air indefinitely if you jet very carefully.

Maybe it could be an option to turn jets off when you host a game.
It would need a symbol or something though as I think some (most?) would avoid it.

I always envisioned the ability to make leaps as an alternative to jumpjets, both because it would help those who get motions sickness, but also to add variety and cool moves like side-dodges.
Sp00derman Dec 11, 2018 @ 11:48am
I think people will find the game to be unbearably sluggish and restricting without the JJs.
Aphex Guy  [developer] Dec 11, 2018 @ 1:19pm
I tend to agree, in that the JJ's provide an exilerating rush to balance out the slower more methodical pace of their movements. It also elevates the gameplay to allow for more unique strategies, and works well alongside VR to get a better sense of speed/movement.
guidonzq Dec 12, 2018 @ 3:03am
Maybe there could be a grinder in the future that does not have JJ's but extra weapons/armour.
For every minute spent in close proximity, it causes team mates to recieve a ~20% reduction to damage that has occured
