My thoughts on this flawed game.
Town of Salem is both a great game and a bad game. Your overall enjoyment of the game all depends on the group you are playing with. The game it's self is fine, but the community for it is pretty awful. Sadly the game is filled with cheating Skypers, trolls, leavers and random lynchers but if you manage to find a game without any of these elements it is truly a very enjoyable experience.

In my most recent game there were literally 4 people all communicating outside of the game. One of them was a serial killer and two of them were town members and they ignored the overwhealming evidence in favour of helping their serial killer buddy win the game. This isn't just me being butt hurt either, they were literally taunting the players while doing this. I think it's sad that the community can be this piss poor at times because this game really is a blast when put with the right people. Hopefully the new game modes will fix these problems but as of right now I'm having more bad experiences with the game then good.

I'd just like to point out that I'm not bad mouthing the developers in any way, I backed this game through Kickstarter and have put nearly 30 hours into this game. It's just very frustrating when a game I adore has such an awful community backing it.

- A concerned Random Towner.

They're working on a better report / ban system, so there's that. :dwayneelf:

That would certainly help. Also an ignore list would be fantastic to reduce the risk of being put with douchebags.

The worst things are the custom games (the only mode worth playing) when some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ noob hosts just pick random stuff out of the list or make the game extremely unbalanced because it is "fun" to have 5-6 killing roles and 5 towns, and so on.
I think I have to rejoin a game about 4 times until I get a solid game setup with 8 towns 3 maf and 1-max 2 additional killing roles.
This is freaking annoying, I don't know why the heck they don't fix that and make a good, balanced and still randomized game to classic mode.

I see the issue mentioned here too.

But another huge issue is the HUGE ammount of hatred towards some players.
Not even five minutes ago I was killed because my name came from a TV show that someone was against. I was Mayor. The Vig shot me. I had revealed too.
Also the racism... I'm not even gonna start...

That is what is called creative gameplay. It's called CUSTOM mode, not CLASSIC mode. You must be pretty butthurt about that kind of gameplay because you ranted about it in another topic too. If you want to play the game you suggest, you should go and play Classic mode. Or keep rejoining indeed. Games with maffia, sk's, amnesiacs, werewolf and arso's can be hell lot of fun.

And I know about all these other issues to yes. But the devs said they are working on different things so it's probably all getting solved.

This game is pretty fun. I just convinced a whole town to kill the serial killer, and most of their major folk (Sheriff, investigator, etc), while composing poetry on each of my kills as a mafioso. When I was in jail, the Godfather killed for me. Same when the escort came at me. Most of the people I've played with have been calm and collected, though there have been cases of cheaters and outside communication. I managed to win a few games without that. Just lots of lying and acting.

I agree with flashback its custom its supposed to be creative. People like you ruin custom with your made up rules for picking roles. This is why I moved to all any where people can't complain about roles and every game is different.

past 5 games i had teammates dumb as bricks. I belive that there will be more trolls in the community as this game gets more popular. Hopefully i am wrong. Love the game but the community is getting worse

I can sort of understand why people leave but I also understand why people find those people who leave annoying. I wouldn't necessarily consider people who play together and communicate outside of the game using Skype as "cheating" because to be honest it's a fun game to play with friends through skype and such. Why is people playing while using skype a bad thing?

Because often when I encounter people with Skype they use it to let one of them win. For example: Player A = investigator, Player B = SK. Player A just gives false clues so that his friends can win as SK. Or Player B belongs to the maffia and tells player A all the names that are in the maffia. And believe me I saw it often very often. And again I am not talking about people that just don't tell their roles to each other.

And about the leaving, I kinda said it in a different topic already, but it really hurts the game a lot. Sure people with roles like Jester or Executioner, can't really add that much more to the game. But people just leave because they don't like a role or when a friend dies four people leave. And more often then not the leavers have roles like Sheriff, Jailor or Godfather. Which just ruins the entire round. Also the dead can be of great use to the Medium. Medium is now a much hated role, because of all the leavers when they die. But Medium can be a game-winning role, the dead can spot things that go lost in the heat of the discussion.

Skype is pretty much cheating but it can be used with friends without ruining the game. Look at some of rpgminx or chilled chaos ToS videos and they use voice communication to throw each off most of the time. But straight out saying your role and stuff is cheating.

Oh I see. Nowadays it's called "creative gameplay" when you have 5 killing roles vs 7 townies, yes? It's just so "fun" to see half the town death after the first night. It's just so creative, how the high IQ hosts express themselfes and their colorful personalitys in the game when they just pick random stuff out off the list because they don't know what the ♥♥♥♥ to do, or how this games works, or how to setup a balanced game where everyone has the same chance to win.
This is how "All Any" was born by the way.
Guess I'm just not intelligent enough to comprehend this form of creative expression :(

Just had two games in a row with cheaters. The first game was skype callers and the second game was 1 guy playing on multiple accounts. They should separate it so solo players get grouped with other soloers and people who join as friends should play with other people who join as friends.

I won't knock on Custom mode. If I hate what the host picks I just leave and rejoin another one. Most of the time all Custom games have the same layout it may as well be its own classic setup. I tried a silly room once where the host had 1 mayor, 1 veteran and everyone else was SK. I said 'what the hey' and stayed. It was pretty fun XD.

I hardly play Custom now. All Any is so much fun! You never know what you're going to get and, with no visible roles on the screen it's harder to know who to trust. Town *can* win in 'All Any', they just have to be smart about it and it takes a lot more concentration, attention and tact to win in All Any than Classic.

You are really aggitated over that stuff, right? And yes that is fun. I like those rounds. Why not? I didn't say you have to like it, I just said that it's creative gameplay. And it is. There are rounds created with no townies or so. So yeah those rounds are enjoyable as well.

All what you wanna do is have the base 'classic' gameplay with townies, a few maffia, a SK and so neutral roles. Well sure, there are people who enjoy those kind of rounds as well. Nothing wrong with that. Just don't ruin a game if you run into a 'creative' game. I don't do it if I run into a 'classic' setup. Why should you do it with an other game? What's so terribly wrong with going back to the lobby wait a couple of seconds and then try to get into another game again.

And if you really really want to play a 'classic' setup. Just go to Classic. All Any still tries to balance it out. So yeah, that's why you encounter the 'creative' rounds on the custom tab. Like I said before it's CUSTOM which means you can enter all the roles you will. This doesn't have to be confined to a certain set of 6 townies, 3 mafia, 1 sk and 2 neutral roles. It can easilly be 6 docs vs 6 SK's. Or a rainbow game. Or whatever. This is where the game can be played as people want it.

People should be able to enter what they want, without getting completly destroyed by some people who want a different game-setup. People who are absolutly terribly offensive towards the host.

Again if I understand the devs correctly they are gonna solve this problem by creating different sets of custom. So don't worry to much, it will all be solved eventually. Just enjoy the game for what it is now.
