How is this different from the free Starcraft II version?

In Starcraft II there has been a custom map called "Mafia" that I've been playing for years. It was on their loading screen that I first saw the kickstarter for "Town of Salem", which initially failed.

I can only assume the two are connected and that the people who made the Mafia Map are also the people who made this.

So is there anything about this that makes it better than the free Starcraft map?

You don't need Starcraft 2, that's a start.

Dark.Revenant helped support the start of this game, but the developers are different. The loading screen was also included in the second kickstarter, which succeeded. The point of TOS was to give the experience of SC2:Mafia without the need for the game itself.

ToS is standalone, but I'm not sure that is actually better...

You can either buy mafia in the form of TOS for $5, or you can download the SC2 Arcade/Custom Maps for $0 which gets you Mafia as well as numerous other games. 50 games for free or 1 game for $5.

ToS can be played for free on a browser.

That just makes this version for $5 even worse. In any case my question has been answered. There is no reason at all for me to buy this.

No, you don't need to buy this. This is basically the same as paying $5 online, but now you can play on steam. that's all.
