Now, Jailors seem to have grown a pair and have started killing anything that is not a Town member. If you're a Jailor and the person you have in prison claims any role that is not a Town role, kill them. Not only do you get to keep your executions but you remove a potential Benedict Arnold as Neutral roles love to side with the Mafia, and the more people you have on the board that can vote with the Town then the greater your chances are of winning.
Also, beware of anyone claiming Sheriff and Medium as Mafia likes to hide behind those roles. If a Medium says the dead are quiet and there are Townies in the graveyard then that should be a red flag. Especially if one of the dead townies is an Invest. (I've seen this happen)
Most of your job is to filter through who you have jailed, who claims what and, by process of elimination, determine who's lying and who's telling the truth. In my opinion, a Townie has no reason to lie to a Jailor so, if you kill a Townie that lied to you and the Town gets mad then it's not your fault.
Your secondary job as a Jailor is to protect the Mayor. If a Mayor reveals then you are expected to jail him every night to prevent any evils from attacking him. If there's a Lookout, and a smart one at that, he'll be watching the Mayor's house and will see if anyone tried to attack him. By protecting the Mayor, this means you won't be able to interrogate any Townies so you have to pay double attention to what people are saying and what roles they claimed. If it's a Mayor game then the Mayor can (and should) tell you what he has learned and you should share your information with him as well. Together you should be able to find out who's lying and who's not.
Other tips off the top of my head:
-Always write in your will and say who you jailed. If you get killed by the SK you jailed and your will is blank then the Town is going to hate you.
-People that take too long to tell you their role in jail should be marked suspicious. If they are evil and don't have a backup role ready they'll be sifting through the graveyard to see what role they can claim. As soon as someone gets jailed they should be pre-emptively telling you what their role is before you even get the chance to ask.
-Beware writing roles in your will because the mafia can use that as a shopping list of who to prioritize. If someone says they are an Escort, for example, ask them to role block person X. If that person gets roleblocked then you know the Escort is telling the truth and you can put CONFIRMED TOWNIE in your will. If someone claims a role and you are not convinced then put something like: CLAIMS TOWNIE BUT I DON'T TRUST THEM.
-Whisper your Invest and Sheriff to find out who they are investigating so you all don't investigate the same people or you don't jail the person they are going to visit.
-If you find a Bodyguard (you better be damned sure he's a Bodyguard though) you can guide him to protect key characters or even yourself.
-Always Jail someone! Sometimes people forget but I've seen Jailors opt out of jailing on N1 or forgetting to jail 2 or 3 times in a row. It's not helpful for the Town. Even if you die N1 to SK then at least the SK is out of the game early and Town can focus on the Mafia.
-And, last but most importantly KILL ALL NEUTRALS. Mafia like to hide behind Neutral roles and Neutrals tend to side with the Mafia.
Me personally though I have a system when I jail people that works really well.
First and foremost, I have a notepad with about 8 codewords, When I jail someone, I give the codewords to people, keep a note of who has what codeword (don't put the codewords in your will, they work both ways)
When I grab someone my conversation line is generally
"Your codeword is X, tell a medium if you die, what is your role?"
Most the time I just ask for a will, and as long as they are possible, I let em go, but I also have tests. and demands
Amne - Become town tommorow, or you'll be seeing me again (if it isn't n1, I'll pick for him)
Lookout - "I'm jailing 5 tommorow, watch him, and whisper "hi" to any and all visitors. if 5 dies I'll jail 6, if 6 dies I jail 7 etc...
Vig - I'm jailing 5 tommorow, if he's dead 6, if he's dead 7. I want you to knock on the cell
Medium - I've given some townies codewords, if you learn one, say it in town.
Ret - The first TI/TP or vet that dies, bring back.
If it is a TP I will give a second codeword "if I have reason to trust you, I will say the word Pizza in town, if you hear that word, protect the person who says it. (if there is a doc and BG claim, and I'm pretty sure one of them is BS, I give both the same codeword and the problem solves itself, also if you use the codeword, will the fact that the TP is supposed to be guarding you, if he's not he's evil.
____
Things that make me slam the execute button
"Does everyone have a unique codeword, or are they all the same?" (never not been evil on me there)
"survivor/exe/jester/witch siding with town" - NOPE (do note, I generally do not jail people who have claimed survivor publicly, and I won't double back for one that I jailed on n1)
Last 5 seconds gyberish will. I'm a transporter, (waits till last 5 seconds N1. 3-9, n2 4-8, n3 2-1)
Nope sorry you should not have waited till the last second to give me a will you knew I couldn't undersand in that timeframe... you dead.
Highly improbable/impossible claims. (3rd bg etc...)
Claims that contradict a partially verified invests will.
Mediums that can't name a code word when 2 or more former inmates that did not auto leave should be in the graveyard (I leave at least one slack in case... well townies leave)
People asking me too many questions...
Anyone who disobeyed an obvious order or instruction I gave them.
I also, later in the game, try to jail according to suspicious activity/voting. So while from time to time I can execute just very stupid tower i take the risk as reward is bigger
