Once, I did this, and I actually got the Arsonist from it.
How does an afk checker work exactly? Bailing on a game is reportable as gamethrowing (they typically won't act on it if it's once in a blue moon, but if the reports pile up, there will be consequences).
Ranked intentionally makes people hit the OK button when their place in the que is reached to make sure they didn't go afk while waiting. Other modes don't have a waiting time.
So, what does the afk checker do. the game already more or less makes sure you are present at the start of the game as mentioned above, which means it's checking to see if someone is afk mid game, someones afk mid game and it does what? I mean once someone is in game and afk... it's roughly equally bad for the game if they suicide, or if they go in.
Also, I highly doubt merit points are the reason people afk. it's more likely hatred of the role they got, and doing whatever has the least automated punishment for bailing. Just as they are willing to alt tab out of the game rather than rolling up an automatic leaver penalty, they'd be just as willing to tab in to hit an "I'm still here" button every 5 minutes or whatever intervals that would be in.
