Same Prince from HotK?

Since this game is a direct prequel to HotK, I was just curious if it was the same prince character. In this game he goes by Prince John, but the prince in HotK was Prince Edmund. Now Prince John (in this game) ends by heading to the bandit forest, so I'm thinking they're supposed to be the same character?

Might just be a translation error for this game's English localization?

I believe they are meant to be the same prince character, but for some reason the name was changed. Could be a translation error, I suppose, or a missed continuity error. I am personally just calling Prince Edmund in the second game Prince John, now!

Actually it's the same person. The name difference it a bug. The prince was called John originally, but was renamed to Edmund on the request from English translator (since there is a real person named Prince John). However, after all these years, we also made a mistake and the original name John somehow came back into play. Unfortunately none of us, not even the testers, noticed this mistake. We will try to fix it in the next update.

What a funny bit of backstory! Yeah, I have probably gotten deeper into the ScriptScenario files for these games than the average user. Mostly doing my own story mods - I even shared one for HotK III here on Steam a few years back: https://steamcommunity.com/app/772430/discussions/0/5047948127385055589/

Anyway I was just curious, and only noticed the discrepancy because I was enjoying all the other references to the original game! I'm actually rerunning it (HotK I w/ the recent QoL update) with a friend of mine who has special needs. It's really nice finding a game he can actually connect with. Thanks for making this series! I installed that mod and really enjoyed it! I play it from time to time in addition to the original game because it is a fun alternative. Thanks for doing that!
