10 Steps to Sturdy, Easy, & Very Useful Cart
Hi all. After a whole bunch of screw-ups, I've learned how to make a chest-cart in about 5 minutes that is extremely sturdy, can haul a lot of stuff, and is very easy to move & versatile. I wanted to take a minute to share what I've learned.

1: Cut two trees. You'll need 9 square timbers and 5 round:

2: Place one 10-length square timber vertically in the ground. About 2/3 of the way up, attach a 3-length round timber. This will be the connection point for the cart.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=495021195
3: Attach large chest to the end of the round timber (use mouse scroll wheel to switch from default small chest to large chest). Attach a second large chest to the side of the first chest.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=495021644
4: Attach a catch block to each corner of the combined chests, as shown. Use the Q, R, and Y keys as necessary to rotate the catch block so it sits just like shown in the pic.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=495022088
5. Attach one wheel to each catch block. IMPORTANT: Make -sure- you rotate the wheel so that the nub that sticks out connects to the catch block. Otherwise there won't be clearance between the wheel & the chests and the wheels won't turn. Easy to forget this step.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=495022554
6. Time to make the front carriage. This is where you will hop in and be able to just run around like normal; the cart will be dragged along in whatever direction you want to run. You don't have to do anything special other than go where you want! So, first, attach a 5-length piece of square timber to the bottom of one of the front catch blocks. Then do the same with the other block.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=495022979
7. Once the two timbers are attached, connect them with a cross-timber in the front. That gives you the carriage space. Next, attach a rope end to each corner of the carriage. This will make it possible to tie the cart up at a destination so it won't roll away.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=495023550
8. Right-click with the hammer on the round timber that is holding the cart up. Make sure your aim is good. It will take 7 good hits to destroy the timber and make the cart fall free to the ground.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=495023836
9. The cart is now free-rolling and ready to go! It can hold 30 stones, or 30 square timbers, and is extremely sturdy. If you want, keep 1 spare square timber in one of the chests. That way, if a carriage timber happens to break, you can repair it instantly.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=495023933
10. Here's my engineer, ready to head off to his first haul. When you get to your destination, just do a quick run-and-jump to get over the edge of the carriage.

Two great things about using chests for a cart: (1) getting stuff into and out of the cart is super easy; (2) stuff doesn't rattle around and destroy the cart when you're running with it.

You can use "T" to put two square timbers in your personal inventory. You then hit "I" to open up the Inventory panel, where you can just drag your two timbers directly into one of the chests. No carrying, no banging, no clanging. Unfortunately, large stones are trickier. You will have to use the manipulation tool to pick up large stones one at a time, hover them over the cart chests until one lights up, then hit "T" to place the stone into the chest.

The idea is great but I think you could have done it better. I used nearly the same method but on one end a third chest is attached so it got more storage space and is not that squareshaped but more like a rextangle what raises stability.

Also your controlhandle is set up too low, you can easily run above it. I used an inverted L so I can go under the longer part into the handling room and use the horizontal bar connecting both L for control on chest-height.

thanks for the tips :)

to Oroberus : this is certainly a very basic DIY Cart for Survival beginners, then we do it our way or improve it with more knowledge of the game :)

I wanted to keep some sense of realism, so I didn't want 3 chests. As it is, it can already haul about 6 tons of material, which is a bit silly! I do like your idea about the inverted L and stooping to go under it. I've only ever run above the cart when it's been stopped at a funny angle, and the fix was just to nudge it a little before moving. I've never had my engineer slip out of it while traveling at speed. I like the simplicity of mine just for ease of building & repair. But yours sounds cool. Does your chest-height one work at all angles? Or are there some where it's hard to get out from under it?

Yes I have to admit, it is kinda unrealistic to do it may way and also maybe even a bit advanced.

No, yet I've not come to the situation were it was tricky to get "in". There is sometimes an issue if you're going down a slope that you can run out of the handlecage to the sides because you're lower then the cart but this can be avoided by using the manipulation tool.

I'll try to make a screenshot of it later so you can have a look.
I put together a quick little video showing my engineer running around the hills with the cart. It really is sturdy & kinda fun. Sorry for the bad video-capture. I seriously need a new computer.

With my method, you can build a new computer from scratch in 5 minutes

Nota : nice cart :)

Unfortunately using Steam to create and upload screenshots does not work with ME (at least for me) so you have to look here:

https://img3.picload.org/image/ipcwppg/l-cart.png

Also, ignore the bar on the left, it is part of my second monitors desktop which I failed to cut, saw as it was already uploaded and decided that today will be my lazy day ^.^

This cart can carry 48 stones, or 57 timber or 192 scrap wood *g*

I also experimented with some kind of axle-bearing handlebar that you can take of the ground but unfortunately this creates a weird kind of a rotation axis which will make the back of the cart lift up in the air while you're pulling/shoving it using this handle, even if fully loaded with stone.

EDIT: Btw your holding post is genius, I used an improvised saw horse to build this and it was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pain *g*

How is the saying? A scientist has to invent the most complex things. An engineer has to make those things work with the least complex possibilties.

That looks really cool, it's a great design - yeah, you can only upload ME screenshots to Steam if you use the F12 key to take those screenshots in-game. When you leave the game you can then upload them.

You get that too?? I've tried making various things with axles and catchblocks to move handlebars -- once even tried making a folding ladder. Always the catchblock seems to add tension/torsion and the whole thing explodes violently.

Thanks! I can't take credit for that post. I saw a YouTuber, "Honey Bunny," use it a few days ago and thought "oh that's toooo good." I'd been using sawhorses and makeshift tables, etc., and yeah, was always a disaster. Just getting one wheel on a cart felt like a massive achievement.

Ah ok, it is genius non the less :D
Tbh I died 2 times while shoving/pulling/rotating around the cart in different states of the creation process by tipping something in some kind of a bad way and it pretty much slammed my face with the speed of light *g*

In the future a construction post will the way to be!

I also thought about some kind of crane so the cart will be free floating while being construced but this would mean that you have to start the construction from the top side in the middle linked to that crane.

Yes! Death by cart construction is one of the most awful waysto go.

I love the crane idea. The hassle is that when you start building, like say adding a wheel to one side, and the weight becomes unbalanced, the dumb thing starts flying all around & exploding. I wish it didn't. A crane seems really realistic & could be a lot of fun.

Already thought about rect- or triangular carrying base that works as link between the main crane rope and the rope(s) connected to the cart? This might negate the applied force imbalance while adding parts. To be sure this "carrier" might even be weightet with a chest.

By this, you can keep the center of mass and direction of applied force mostly stable. I haven't tried it because I don't like creative mode and survival still is a bit clumsy to tackle something like this just for the sake of proving

EDIT: I can't remember how this stuff is called, it is like crane forks but not to put it under the stuff you lift but to let it hang from them instead of directly the crane rope

That's a great idea. Would definitely still be clumsy to try in Survival, but I would love to see it in Creative, to see if the game physics worked.

There is no reason why you can't place the chests on thier sides making this dilema much easier to fix. just shove the stone at the cart and press T a bunch and that'll do the trick.
