Cart axles: Each wheel, Or front & Back?
Anyone have any thoughts on connecting wheel axles across to the matching one on the other side of a cart to or leaving them seperate so all wheels rotate independently?

Seperate ones don't need to skid one wheel during a turn and ought to steer better for it but I haven't really had any problems with both wheels locked together. And it seems to me that spreading loads across two catch blocks with a common axle should make for a stronger wheel assembly but I haven't used really heavy/large carts or beat them up enough that I can tell if it really matters. What's everyone else doing and how does it work out for you?

I keep all of mine separate & independent. The cart I use, made of two chests, is super sturdy and can really take a beating. Never had a wheel or axle break.

I'm thinking pushing some down a hill to see what/if anything breaks might be worthwhile. Could be the smaller stuff is tough enough to not really have any problems.
I hadn't even really thought about there being a difference between independent wheels vs wheels tied together by a rod. But of course you're right, and I bet they do behave differently. If you try a test I'd love to see what you find out.

Tried some stuff, Learned something - Mostly that I need to do this differently.

Rolled some simple carts (Large chest with a catch block on each bottom corner, 2-block spacer behind each wheel and added a connector for the common axle ones.) Down a ramp on top of a hill. Added 2000Kg stone to each to keep them rolling.

The common-axle ones did seem to track straighter when being pushed but that could just be me. They were stiffer though - Pasting loaded carts in onto the ramp they just hit the ground and stopped. The seperate axle flexed quite a lot under the load and bounced a few times.

10 carts each, Results:

Can't really tell what's really going on here - After three or four of each they were wrecking on parts of previous carts. I plan to run one, mark the closest bit of debris with a campfire and clean up before running another. Not tonight though.
