Do crops grow underground?

I'm wondering if underground farming is possible? Before i spend a lot of time digging it out and testing it. Do crops grow underground?

Hi, yes it works on dirt but not on stone.

ok cool. can you drop dirt on top of stone, with shovel? or that doesnt' work?

Tho we can load in creative mode to use the Voxel tools and change stone for ''Soil''.

I've used the Sphere and selected ''Soil'' while tool in hand > keys [ or ] and click mouse wheel to change the terrain :
