Survival mode with barbarians
Hello-
I sort of decided that survival mode with barbarians was unworkable, with the game in its present state, because fairly early-on you'll get killed by a barbarian with a mace or other deadly weapon. You'll re-spawn in your bed, but that won't really help, because the barbarian will still be there, tearing your camp apart.

So I played in non-barbarian mode (peaceful mode?), but found that eventually it got pretty boring. I researched things like mechanized farming, stone-works, etc., planted a nice garden, built some cool stuff.

So I'm thinking about re-starting with barbarians again. Can I build a wall around my camp to keep barbarians out? But I'll have to venture out to get food (until I get farming tech). I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to play a survival game with barbarians, and how to keep from getting killed early on.

Hi, the easiest way is to build simple wooden cube on the soil, jump on it and kill the Barbarians from above, this way they can't hit you.

If you have a mace or sword, you will be able to block their hits with Right click, it helps a lot. :AOEKnight:

sorry correction > block attacks with Right click

If I'm out in the open and suddenly get attacked by a barbarian, I don't think I'd have time to build a wooden cube and jump on it. One idea would be to build wooden wall all the way around my camp, with stairs interspersed, which I could climb and jump on a barbarian.

In the early part of the game, I wouldn't have the tech to build a mace or sword. But I would try to get there quickly!

Thanks for the ideas.

I always run (sprint = Shift) to avoid a fight :WhiteSword:

Barbarians don't show up until you start to build. Don't pin anything to the ground until you have a weapon. Your early game should be grinding your way through the tech tree until you can face barbarians, not building.

Barbarians cannot jump. A simple stone wall , even mostly buried will stop them. You can easily jump over, Barbar cannot.

Once you have a crossbow barbarians are just another resource. Shoot them once, run 30 meters, turn and shoot them again.

Barbarians have never once come to my latest build, up on a hilltop. They come to my flax farm, lower down, but have never come up the hill to my main build area, after hundreds of hours of game time. So start by finding a wooded hilltop with accessible iron, and get to work!

You do realize those barbarians are the easiest mob in any game to date right? Make wooden club as soon as you start, very slowly kite barb backward to avoid their attacks, learn the timing of the strike of the club, and step forward just as the club would hit. Voila, after 5 or so swings you should have a dead barbarian and a full health bar. I was actually hoping for more barbarians, and harder enemies with some actual equipment instead of just broken swords. Having that source of iron from the very beginning is nice though.
