Building in survival.
Right now it looks like building something as simple as a house is absolutely screwed. If I'm just being an idiot someone please let me know but as of right now blocks (walls, supports, ect.) are not clicking into place like they should. A few keys are not working, crouch (ctrl), free build (j) and others among them. So again if anyone can help please do.

Crouch, for me is C, and not ctrl but besides that I too have had little luck with building. I'm having a really difficult time getting 2nd story walls or even roofs to snap onto my first floor.

I have noticed that in order to get things to snap well I have to stand a decent distance back and look toward the ground which is annoying because then I can't really see where it's snapping. I usually zoom out (ctrl + mouse wheel) while in FP to get the item as far away from me as possible in order to make the best of things however building does seem unenjoyable at the moment.

I also can't seen to get dynamic mode to work.

Maybe we're both just idiots? I'd like to hear some input from some others.

I couldn't for the life of me build a simple thatch roof on my house, without it doing something retarded.

I tried almost everything to get it to work, but had to switch to creative to finish the roof off as it drove me mad.

Looks great now. ;)

Well, I must be idiot #3 since I also have trouble putting on a roof. Also the snapping to grid doesn't always work..but I do not know what I am doing wrong (or right).
It was much worse right after the recent big update- so the recent bugfixes have improved things a lot.

But still, for a building game to be so hard to build with is nuts.

scafolding and looking at the right location (the actual mount point) help tremendously. you can use 1 timber to make stairs and 2~ sticks to make wood structure (uncrafted) to reach hard to reach places and then easily tear them down when done. balancing on a wall and creating a roof is a thing you do, planning ahead of time (more for stone constructions since the insane decon time) is a must. I spent a few weeks building up a large survival only castle/town/logging camp setup: here the album http://imgur.com/a/f3ImK

all of this was built by hand in survival, theres more SS's from this world this is just the castle/keep build itself.

on your note with (j) not working, it does, there seemns to be a bug with it, you need to click J then deselect then reselect the block for some reason to get it to work (for me anyway). Hopefully it gets fixed. And hold (SHIFT) when placing blocks to toggle compound mode, i beleive its on by default now and stuff doesnt' snap properly unless you toggle it off for some pieces (roofs and floors are a big culprit)

also putting on a roof is very easy, you have to build construction helpers to help you reach the roof and build it
