They announced this news of them EOL this game on the October 18th of 2018.
And what you know you look at the player count history of the game then, and it was at 1173 peek for that month, they clearly saw the end since even before 2018 October came around, April 2018 was when it first hit the 1000 range player lows for its first time in its lifetime.
But this must of seen the player count decline fast yet again to 1000 range that's clearly when they knew they had to make the call. Do they keep going and maybe waste cash that may or may not save the game, or call it quits. Have in mind 1173 players doesn't = all were spending money too, so safe to say profits were low at this point when well they were still letting players spend real money into this game.
Anyone who has been around for MP games as far as i've have or at least MP modes for their games, knows the death point most company's pull the plugs are normally around this range anyways, the range of 2000 - 650 is the bit common range company's call it quits for their servers. This range at least back in the old gaming days, was called the grave count, Since these numbers you knew any day now your gonna see them shut it down and any lower then 650 well likely to be shut down in the next day.
Tho likely all mention of this old gaming term label is gone due to time, since it was mainly only spoken on dead gaming forum places and those personal website pages with all those animated gifs and selected music you might know the ones the eairly 2000s like pages. Lucky splash damage let us keep playing most company even back in 2018 wouldn't do this, more so now days where they will refuse to update their game to keep it playable even when it could be still played solo-ed.
So am glad they did. Officially i've stopped playing this last month said my final goodbyes tho i guess on its 10 year anniversary may come back for a day or 12 as long as others come flocking for its 10 year anniversary next year, if not then oh well still had great fun with this title while it lasted.
