After the Steam release, they will reinstate the subscription, but maybe they'll keep the free version as well—I’m not sure. They’ve always been against cash shops, so I doubt there will ever be one (though developers often change their minds).
Here’s a comparison of the free and subscription versions:

A small honest indie developer of a reasonable MMO who had problems with their funds and seems to being coming to Steam to survive.
Yet, you make false claims and dump them so fast it reminds me of the expression 'Vroom, like a rat out of an aqueduct!' as Monty Python said.
The only thing in the list that I see as clear P2W was 'Ember Ring healing enhancement bonus. This bonus extends to all nearby players'. And that is even questionable.
This is completely false, there's not even a grain of subjective truth here. Subscription benefits let you have multiple characters and slightly more space in your character and account-wide stash. You also have a slightly faster regeneration rate when resurrecting (a matter of 30-60 seconds). This is as anti-P2W as a game can be, don't spread lies.
I hope they stick to their plans and keep MTX out!!
Welcome to my ignore list, enjoy
You can get subscription benefits if you want them and are spared a cash shop entirely. So it's pay for advantage which subscriptions have always been.
It's not completely false. If you don't subscribe you lose out significantly on inventory space as not only are those slots lost but you can't make more characters to take advantage of the inventory slots they would have had, as well as losing access to the trade skills they could have raised. That's a lot of advantage to be deprived of, Some could feel that's enough kernel of truth to satisfy their P2W definition.
This is completely false. You lose out on "no" inventory space between non-subbed and subbed.
You gain 5 bank slots per row being subbed which in no form is p2w. ( something like 60 slots vs 75 slots) not a big deal.
The only real subbed benefits are
5 char slots (really the only subbed perk that would matter) can be bypassed by a couple free accounts
Unique Subscriber Titles
Access to the QA Test Servers
Drifters Crafting Station
Portable, Placed by subscriber (30 min cool down, cant be seen as a true perk)
and usable by any nearby players
Ember Ring healing enhancement bonus
This bonus extends to all nearby players (so if a subbed player is near the ring, non subbed get the same benefit)
Giving ongoing support to the Stormhaven Devs and become the Heroes of Stormhaven
Allowing us to continue our work of expanding the content and the game world of Embers Adrift
I don't mind paying for a game though, and I'd prefer a pay to play option, similar to free to play, but with things that are unlocked through a store, in this case from what I've read above, things like extra characters, zone quests, bank space, etc. Doesn't sound like a pay to win setup, but I would still rather avoid a sub and I hope they come up with an alternative scheme to get people like me to play.
If it's a sub only, I probably will just pass on it, though I do admit it does sound pretty good.
Yup, you can play one character for free, for ever (with a slightly reduced bank space.) Subscription gives you up to 8 characters I think, and slightly larger bank space.
There are 3 class types, each with 3 sub types = 9 characters classes to play.
And - 9 different crafting classes, max 3 per character.
So 3 characters works well.
And - you can play right now if you want, a post on their forums explains how :

No ETA yet on when Steam will be implemented.
