I have sucessfully enabled the mod, you were right, it wasn't enabled.
When I type in looklike, I get another prompt where it tells me to type the name of the entity i wish to change into. I type astral tabby, press enter and then it seems to change for a second, and then it changes back into the white dash as before.
Yes, I've tried it with "snapjaw". The player sprite changes into a white snapjaw for a second, then changes back into the white dash again. Same behaviour.

this explains why the Playersprite in the main menu gets randomly selected. I changed the file to look like this:

So now I get the astral tabby sprite in the game load menu again. Sucess!
Sadly, this doesn't change the playersprite in the game. Also: Saving and leaving the game resets my manual edits in the savefile, so I'm greeted by a white box in the "select save file"-menu again.
I assume that something is wrong with the save file, and I don't know what or where I need to edit it. :(
Can I send it somewhere?
Not sure if you can send stuff without alphabeard commenting here, if it is not about a crash
