Is there any "right way" to play?
Or it´s just "Pick what you want, play a bit, experience the insanity, die - rinse and repeat with experience you gained in previous runs?"

Some builds are easier to start with than others, for sure. But there are many ways to become ridiculously, disgustingly powerful by the late game. You can experiment to find such builds for yourself, read some guides, or just look at the debates other players post.

Thank you!
I´m not affraid to use guides...but why I have that weird feeling this is one of those games which are based on my own trial and error and THAT should be fine.

Of course, I´m eyeballing to be esper (right now I´m can have physical and mental mutations).

There is simply way too much options xD

Play how it is most interesting to you. If you want some more info for some plan or some good beginners tips, just ask. You can also just play the tutorial char until you die and then do your own chaos. If you survive a bit into Red Rock, you probably have the basic stuff down until the game cranks up mechanics.

Limiting yourself at the start makes things more digestible.

Thank you so much!

I´ve looked at some basic stuff, or how to distribute points for starter character.

I have musket, four arms and mostly physical mutations (release gas/force bubble/flurry) so far.

Got over baboons, killed a lot of snapjaws, chameleons, boars and some mental attack guys.

And got mauled by one legendary bastard, which I simply overlooked (and it was his den).

Otherwise I think for lvl 8 I survived quite a lot - so probably will stick with him until I brick myself. Then I will try esper build, which looks pretty fun, too.

Oh, and put all stats to 18 except EGO for start.

Yeah what you describe sounds like you both already got the basics down and do not have an issue being careful and adapt instead of rushing in head first or leaning super super heavily into one side and ignoring weaknesses.

An Esper playthrough will be rather different quickly though, since they are very much focused on one thing.

Welcome to Qud

Haha, thank you!

In opposite - I expect the game to take me apart from limb to limb with little to no help at all!
The gameplay si very fun (but as in other sandbox it´s expected to find your own fun - not to expect the game to make one for you).

I love the game visually. I had the luck to experience first RPGs in similiar graphics (and you won´t believe it - I still play Mordor 1.1).

Not to mention it reminds me (for some reason) Dwarf fortress, which is unbelievably fun, deep and often unforgiving as well.

The first story mission, More Than A Willing Spirit, gives you a better reward if you're level 12 or lower when you turn it in. Anything that accomplishes that is the correct way to play.

Thanks for the tip!
