Does wiring and other machine-sim stuff go anywhere?
I haven't run across a situation or objects where there would be any point in laying down electrical wire to power a machine and then use it. I assumed generators, wiring, and machines would constitute some kind of base-building system. Do you ever get to the point where you're setting up power and machines to do something? Or, is there a one-off quest or something where you need to wire up a machine (no spoilers though please, just curious if this is a mechanic that's ever used) to get past the point? I would expect at least that much, I guess, since I don't know why else there'd be all this dev work into generators, power, and machines.

Or was it a simulation branch that ended up sort of abandoned? I'm surprised there's no way to farm plants, or build permanent walls. I'm guessing basebuilding was potential content that mostly relegated to the backburner for a potential future DLC?

So far my most extensive interaction with generators/conduit/machines is when I accidentally set the bears' lab on fire and destroyed some equipment when I botched an attempt to identify one of the machines. I painstakingly repaired the damage, I'm not sure why. (Especially since that was a classic run that ended not long after.)

Check down the lowest levels of the rusted archway. You can also find other useful machinery like broadcast power stations (or the stuff in e.g. Bethesda Susa) that can use power, though some of the stuff can be directly charged with bits if you only need to use them once. Building permanent walls is also something you can do with some shoes later on.

The power lines in the Barathrumites labs cause sparks when damaged that can hurt or even killed some of them, which might make you lose a trader. There is also another spoiler reason why they are relevant.

There is also the Hearthpyre mod if you want more base building:

I've managed to run wire between a fusion reactor and an unpowered gate that I've found randomly while delving. Of course that just gets you a portal to some other random gate in Qud, which can result in Fun depending one where you end up. There's not currently any quests or anything that require this though, its just exploration for your own edification.

It is a nice start into a cave dwelling run I think though. They made one of those static down in the rusted archways a while ago, which was probably for people who just want to dive down deep. You have to repair it fist though.
