red rock crygenic chamber. .
wow. i am on a nee run and was doing redrock and i go down the stais. . and the stairs are smack dab in the center of a crygenic chamber. i get instantly frozen and started taking damage. .

i somehow broke free, by spamming the 3 hoarfrost shrooms i found on the way, (super lucky find), and the fact i have carapace managed to gain 65 frost resistance, but now i can't finish this quest. the only way down is through this stairway.

unless i find a pneumatic jackhammer and dig through the wall from another screen, so yeah, that's a possibility, but this is really messed up that the stairs above can generate a map below that just dumps you into a deathtrap like that

You should be able to destroy the vents for the gas, but yeah imo Red Rock should forbid this generation, since there is no warning for walking into dangerous gas (unlike dangerous liquids), so it can create surprise death. It is less relevant later on, but at least the first quest you get should imo be free of this. Red Rock already has a few special generation rules, so this could be added imo.

This really shouldn't happen, but there is another way into Red Rock. In the lake with the water wheel in Joppa there is a cave entrance that leads down towards a direct path to Red Rock at strata 4. It's usually much more dangerous, but since the normal way to progress is blocked off, it's the safest route under the circumstances. Just travel down to strata 4 and go north until you reach Red Rock's central cell. It will say you're in Red Rock before you're in the cell with the defanged girshlings, so once that happens just travel one cell north.

yeah, i understand i could just use the subterra to get in that way, since i know the subterra screens match the overworld and redrock is exactly 6 screens north of Joppa. just need some way of digging through the walls.
when i said "impossible", i just meant "impossible right now, with the low level character i have".
I feel like a starter quest in the "noob" area shouldn't throw stuff like this at a player, but . .it's a learning experience, and i escaped the deathtrap, so no real harm was done.
It just feels cheap when i can suddenly be thrown into an unwinnable situation through no fault of my own, but then, that goes with the territory, if i play roguelikes, that's gonna happen.

i'm not bashing the game, especially since it's full of "cheat" options in the debug menu and i can choose to enable "checkpoints" from the character creation.
i've been playing classic permadeth, but that's my choice. It wasn't forced upon me.

I love how accessible this game is.

The waterlogged tunnel, 4 strata deep, leads directly from Joppa to Red Rock, no digging required. There is a free pickaxe in the tunnel anyway, though, along with another goodie.

All you have to do is autoexplore in Joppa and the opening will become visible.

so, you have to descend to strata 4 to find the path?
every time i've gone in there in the past, i git hopelessly lost and eventually come across a room with some enemy way out of my league and i die, but i always stayed on strata 1.

i just hit level 12 on this character and i bought another new mutation and got burrowing claws (with a bonus limb included), so i can just dig through that way. .
also have 73 cold resistance now, but i don't want to risk that cry chanber, especially now that i can just dig there

The path leads to the lowest level of Red Rock, which is 4 strata deep. Then it is just directly north, since overworld map and underworld have the same dimensions and map placement and Red Rock is directly 3 parasangs north of Joppa.

Indeed the underground has much more dangerous enemies than Red Rock has. If you start in Joppa and instantly go down that way, you can basically be killed in 2 turns by a slugsnout from the shadows.
