Random River Quest Tips?

I have a quest to follow a river that very quickly turns into a marshland.

Any tips for how to find the target location when I can't follow the river?

Do not want to skip the quest.

There's always the possibility of a bug, but...

Sometimes it looks like a river or other terrain feature looks like it's going one way, but it's going another way. Or it seemingly "merges" with similar terrain which makes it harder to figure out. You might want to retrace your steps and check out other screens around the last screen you know for sure contained the river you were following.

Rivers are about 8000+ drams while marsh pools are 2000-4000 iirc, so you'll have to use [L]ook to follow the deep water.

Did they add these as random quests? I only know of the river quest in Kyakukya and that one is far away from marshlands.

Searched for a few more hours. Eventually spawned an esper hunter that killed me. River depth was helpful, but that eventually ended randomly. Tried finding places where it branched through terrain, and no luck there.

And yes, it's a type of quest you can get from random villages.
